I feel this is the place to come for answers to leading questions about current cultural mores. The Atlantic posits hyperpop as the countercultural sound of the 2020s.
But is it?
Please tell me!
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2021/03/hyperpop/617795/

It feels like the whole AW site has gone a bit hyperpop recently.
All the hallmarks of Marketing.
Sounds and looks like shit in that clip.
The sweary “singer” (inverted commas because he’s not actually singing, nearest thing to that is the keyboard programming) looks quite punchable.
WTF’s he on about, anyway? Couldn’t decipher it.
Yes. I am old.
I think it’s meant to look and sound like shit. I’m not sure it’s something you can market, is it? You either love it or hate it, and it seems very easy to have an instant reaction to it.
I think it’s quite innovative. Particularly the broken visuals – playing with the quirks of dodgy internet connections
It is not God Save The Queen is it.
Pathetic rubbish….they should get a job and grow up…fucking Milleniuls š
Someone is definitely trying to market it, otherwise it wouldn’t be a “thing” and we wouldn’t be discussing it.
Me bit curmudgeonly too.
What is it?
Not seeing much original there – some ideas re-appropriated and sped-up. Ibiza dance with feedback?
Same sh*t, different backing track.
I’m sure it will go down a storm in nightclubs (if they ever open) and will probably be the kicking genre of 2021. Half expect to see a C List “celebrity” strutting about to it at Christmas on Strictly Boost My Public Profile While Dancing A Bit
Not getting it – but then it’s probably not for me is it
(it doesn’t have a guitar on it for a start)
You may be right about noting original. The Atlantic says “On the surface, the duoās 2019 debut album, 1000 Gecs, is a prankish, postmodern collage of Skrillex, Mariah Carey, Blinkā182, Nelly, Linkin Park, Kenny Loggins, eurodance, and ska”.
But the author likes it (I think): “What glues together such clashing influences isnāt just a sense of musicalityāthough Brady and Les are excellent songwritersābut a fascination with amusicality. The vocals are manipulated to achieve the whininess of SpongeBob SquarePants. The grooves fracture and reroute habitually. The harmonic textures evoke train cars on rusted tracks”.
Yes, there are no guitars. But I like the way it goes from pop tune and silly whiny vocals at 1.37 down a deep hole into noise and feedback.
I agree with Rigid.
I can also see them going down a bomb, for example, at festivals.
Quirky, energetic, unconventional. exciting… If I walked into one of their gigs, I’m sure I would find it all rather interesting. But whether I’d stay for the whole set, is another matter.
Will I be pouring myself a glass of Famous Grouse and enjoying hyperpop after the family have gone to sleep?
Rather unlikely. I’ll be opting for some medieval, Theorbo noodlings or some post-modern hurdy gurdy.
So very tired.
So that’s what the milkman was whistling at 5am this morning.
I’m putting a pin in this, and I’ll get around to it eventually. I’m up to 1975 right now.
Hooray! The first non-negative comment. (Can you tell I’m getting desperate?)
We’re looking at 2066, Sal.
It’ll be the Norman invasion all over again
Thereās a new Fat Boy Slim album due ?
If I didnāt see the video and was told it was Daft Punk – Iād go ā oh, right…ā. and Iād end up liking it.
Is this the best example?
Judging upon it, the judge from Canada gives it a 5 out of ten.
But how much do you give it, Bellows?
8.
You want more? Charli XCX (as voted for in the AW 2021 poll) is reputed to be queen of the scene
She’s been around a while now though, made quite a few acclaimed records. It’s essentially dance pop, pretty much the sound of now. Sounds like trying to create a genre or ‘scene’ where none exists.
“Sounds like trying to create a genre or āsceneā where none exists.”
Business as usual for the business of music, then.
this was one of my favourite songs from last year. Guaranteed 100% banger
Reminds me a bit of The Prodigy’s Firestarter.
If we were told Fripp was guesting on Money Machine that would set the cat among the pigeons.
Strong tasting notes of Pinky & Perky tend to overwhelm my enjoyment, but I recognise the techno tropes on display from the music of John Hopkins, Rival Consoles, Daniel Avery and many more.
Not exactly Steely Dan, is it? I think I am perfectly happy not being hip and “down with the kids” now. This is probably how our parents felt when they heard us listening to Supertramp.
I felt much the same way when I had to listen to Supertramp, @Vincent.
Charli XCX co wrote IconaPopās 2012 mega hit I like it. Talented lady.
A sure-fire Hitmaker.
DKDC as we say.
Do they play Highway to Hell?
I’m sure I’ve seen 100 Gecs somewhere before-
And that wonderful sketch reminded me of Ylvis, who actually are Norwegians. And very funny too.
Its the biggest henge I’ve ever seen
I look forward to hyperfolk and hyperjazz. Only a matter of time.
And hyperspace! That’s going to be great.
Don’t go there, retro. it’s out there and it’s not nice.
Like Sum 41 after sucking on Helium
Sum 41? Asked nobody….
In other news that nobody asked for, the first (and least good, if you can imagine that) Travis album is being reissued.
I’ve realised what it reminds me of.
Back in my days of designing MP3 devices we’d test the encoders by taking a WAV file, encode it to MP3, and subtract the one from the other. We’d then be listening to the difference – ideally there’d be nothing you could hear, but there always was some sort of ghostly echo.
If you take the singer’s vocals, put Cher’s Believe levels of Autotune and effects on, and remove the original human-generated part, that’s what that track sounds like.
And I think that is what they are aiming for – exploring the harsh and uncanny sounds and visuals of technology and colonising them artistically.
They’re aiming to make some cash, to buy better clothes with.
That too.
