Internet Radio – recommend

Getting back into internet radio in the last few weeks

Just wondering if the Afterword has any recommendations/suggestions?

I’m currently enjoying 3RRR, BBC6, WFMU, dublab. thanks

  2. I don’t really “do” internet radio, which is probably a bad thing.
    I like listening to some of Resonance FM’s output, but almost always in podcast form. It’s like Radio 3 & 4 mixed together for weirdos.

    There are some great shows on there, but sometimes it’s too arty-farty and sometimes it’s too intellectual-up-it’s-arse. I do like “Framework”, which is mostly field recordings and sound collages. A good non-ordinary chillout.
    “Hello Goodbye” is hit and miss live-in-studio performances and chat, mostly by people you’ve never heard of. Can be marvellous, can be atrocious in a not-good way.
    “OST” is soundtrack and library recordings, hosted by Jonny Trunk. That’s always interesting. “Sound Projector Radio Show” is a hit/miss eclectic mix of music, tending towards the weird end of the spectrum.
    A comic highlight for me is Max Keiser & Stacy Herbert’s scabrous “The Truth About Markets”, which flings brickbats and shit at how the Fiat-Capitalist banking system and the politicians who help it along have been and continue “doing us up our arses”. Take the detail of the shows with a large pinch of salt, but get it in your soul that those bastards are definitely NOT in it together with the rest of us.
    “Wavelength” is music and talk about music, mostly. Variable.

    For gamers there’s “One Life Left”, for SCi-Fi lovers there’s “Electric Sheep”, for comic afficionados there’s “Panel Borders”. For opera lovers there’s “The Opera Hour”, for cycling folks there’s “The Bike Show”. None of these are my personal cuppa.

    One station I listen to when I remember (not often, sadly) is WXYC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. https://wxyc.org
    A very eclectic student-run college station from the University of North Carolina, which is the first radio station in the world to stream it’s on-air signal live on the internet, in 1994.
    My old friend Jane does some DJ-ing there now and then.

    I’m listening to WXYC right now and DJ Poe is playing John Coltrane’s “Black Pearls”. Previously it was “Rapunzel & Other Works” by Lou Harrison. Before that it was a bit of “Open” by the Necks after “I Want To Be a Suicide Bomber” by SIFIR

  3. I like FIP, a French station that plays musique eclectique. Translation: Afterword-friendly, certainly from where I sit.

    Time spent on the TuneIn radio app pays dividends.

      • I’m not a huge radio listener, except in the car. There’s a good community radio station in Perth called RTR FM. A lot of what they play is too hipster for my taste, but they have some good local and roots programmes and I’ve long been a fan of Woodstock Rock a show that plays records from 1965-73 only.

        • Triple R and PBS in Melbourne are, for mine, the best. Eastside radio in Sydney has come on a lot. The ABC has the youth station Triple J and now there is the internet only Double J which is for older people who have moved on from JJJ. They have a coule f great announcers – Karen Leng ex RRR and Henry Wagons . They often get artisits doing a month of programs – Wagons, Steve Kilby from the Church , Robert Forster from the Go Betweens etc. ABC Jazz is another digital only station featuring jazz only.

      • Indeed it is – the wonderful Radio Tres, displayed on my trusty Revo as “RNE – Radio 3” if any other Revo users (other Internet Radios are available) want to search for it.

        It’s the most eclectic station I’ve ever heard, and the late night DJs just ooze sultry, tobacco-wracked, Spanish Brandy-soaked cool.

        While I’ve been typing this I’ve heard The Kinks followed by The Divine Comedy and now they are playing some French Euro-electronica by someone called Vitalic (very PSB).

            When the wi-fi ceased to function, I spoke to the factory. They asked me to ship it to them for investigation, and a week or so later it turned back up again, with all-new guts on board. Brilliant.

            Tres are currently streaming The Doors Live. The horror! The horror!

            Ah, saved by the 2 o’clock Spanish Pips.

            Now we’re getting some fab Brazilian nylon-string guitar smooch music – Gilberto Gil or similar….

  10. Another Shout out for WWOZ from New Orleans.
    French station Mister Stuff – Rock, Reggae & World very few announcements or commercials.
    If you are into the Blues then KCOR from Kansas City is a must.

  11. I occasionally listen to Dandelion Radio which was set up by Peelites after John Peel died. As with Peel, the music is uneven but there’s always the possibility of hearing something unusual and different. That said, David Bowie just took the number 1 and 2 spot in their Festive Fifty.
