Arguably the most consistently inventive show on TV this last decade
– especially given the fact that, unlike apparent “competitors” like Black Mirror,
it has a rigid approx 27 minute time limit and nugatory budgets from the BBC
While there are inevitably going to be peaks and troughs, they’ve knocked it
out of the park many, many times – the 12 Days of Christine, the Live Halloween
Special being two oft-quoted examples.
Ninth and final series has been uniformly excellent, imho.
In true RS and SP style, the contents of tonight’s final episode are tightly under wraps
So what do you reckon they’ll leave us with:
Something about hares?
The rumored but apparently impossible to do On The Buses episode they flagged up
only to run the 3 x 3 quiz show (the only ep in which RS and SP do not appear)?
A showcase for Sir Ian McKellen – the one actor they famously tried but could never
get onboard?

FWIW, my own personal faves as of right now are Tom and Geri, Diddle Diddle Dumpling,
To Have and to Hold and The Witching. How about you?

If I’m to pick a top 3, in no particular order,
The 12 Days of Christine
The Riddle of the Sphinx
Zanzibar
As I said in the last Bogger Takeover I’ve found the last couple of series slightly disappointing, but they’ve brought their best to the final shows and we already have tickets to the stage production next year.

Speaking of The Riddle of the Sphinx, fans might want to have a go at today’s Guardian Crossword.

Another big fan of this show here & I agree this last series has been very very good so far. I eagerly await what treats we will be left with tonight!
For my money the best episodes are;
Sardines
The 12 Days of Christine (as already mentioned. This was the first one I ever saw & it floored me!)
Cold Comfort
The Bill
Bernie Cliftons Dressing Room (I have watched this numerous times & it gets better each time)
The Referees A W***er
3 by 3
I annoy my partner, as pretty much every episode I pause it to marvel at Steve Pembertons acting. He is truly something else & his range is staggering
KDH says
“The range. He’s got such range…It’s f*ckin’ Pauline, the whole lot. Pauline…Pauline, Pauline, Pauline, Pauline”. https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/rhlstp-with-richard-herring/id520831548?i=1000579419395 (at 59:26).
One of the funniest podcasts I’ve ever heard.
seanioio says
Haha, that is brilliant. Thanks @KDH

Never ‘eard of it.
Jaygee says
Must have missed that one

Found the first series at the Eel Market. This better be good.
Jaygee says
Hope you like it.

I enjoyed the Inside… Inside No 9 podcast which abruptly stopped at the beginning of Series 8. I wonder why?
Gatz says
FFS! Just because they’re meant to be furtive doesn’t mean they, Katherine Parkinson in particular, should be muttering so quietly that subtitles are essential.
Jaygee says
Lovely ending.

Definitely one for the fans. Tons of references to previous episodes. Very nice way to wrap things up.
Chrisf says
Whilst I spotted many references to the previous episodes, I didn’t realise that there were Easter eggs for every single episode….

Jaygee says
One of the biggest joys of IN9 episodes has always been realizing just how much you missed when you rewatch them.
Looking forward to the stage show which I’ll fly over from Ireland to watch
intoxicatedman says
That’s great. Noticed some of the obvious ones, but clearly the whole episode was all about the Easter eggs. Will re-watch.
I noted the below wording in the Guardian’s ‘what to watch’ section on the day of broadcast, which was clearly intentional ‘misdirection’ given the crossword connection on the same day.
“…it has been confirmed that they are the only two people who appear in it. A fitting ending. ”
Obviously the exact opposite to the show.
rotherhithe hack says
It’s been excellent over all nine series. The only downer for me was when they didn’t run the ‘On the Buses’ spoof that had been flagged up but did the game show with Lee Mack, the only episode that made me feel bored.
Jaygee says
Oddly enough also the only exp in which RS and SP don’t appear.
hubert rawlinson says
I’d tried to download the last one several times and finally succeeded, if it had taken nine goes then I think I’d have given it a miss.
Jaygee says
Keep “Plodding On”, Hubes, it’s well worth the effort

Personally I think the last episode now goes in the pantheon of great final episodes to long running shows. Brilliant call backs to the past, more Easter eggs than I could take in, but leaving with a smile and a warm feeling.
