Yesterday evening, that stupendous, neo-psychedelic groove machine from Melbourne, King Gizzard and his Wizard Lizard, played their first ever concert in Sweden. They were as exhilaratingly exciting as when I saw them at Roskilde last summer. Do read Dr Volume’s recent review of their recent gig in Manchester if you haven’t heard of them.
Australia and New Zealand do seem to be producing some very distinctive, new artists at the moment. Tame Impala are selling out stadiums. Lorde made a major dent on the international charts with Royals. Courtney Barnett is the darling of the indie crowd. Fat Freddy’s Drop are one of the best live reggae bands I’ve seen in yonks.
The Bamboos, Gotye, Empire of the Sun, Kasey Chambers……
The list goes on and on.
Time to celebrate this. Here’s a thread to post favourite songs by those artists or any other newish talents hailing from south of the Equator. So not just Oz and NZ.
Reggae from Antartica, a favourite new jazz band from Tonga, metal from Bela Horizonte, an ambient track from Papua New Guinea: all are welcome.
Let’s kick off with a cracking pop song from Tame Impala: The less I know the better.
