This was the first thing I saw/heard this morning, and I’ve shared it with everyone I know.
In spite of being on that grinning loon Chris Evans’s Radio 3 show, it’s quite fantastic, and features the current iteration of The Waterboys being very cool in a confined space.
At first, I thought that Maureen Lipman was there to provide backing vocals, having a jaunty musician’s hat and all, but it soon becomes apparent that she’s pretty nonplussed, and that she and Mark Strong are drumming their fingers, waiting to be interviewed by Simon Mayo.
This could go two ways. 1) Either post your favourite footage of a band setting up in a small space; or 2) Let’s all go on about how brilliant The Waterboys are for a bit.

Ha! Just realised that I’ve typed Radio 3. Evans should be on Radio 3; that would set the cat among the pigons.

I saw the Waterboys do this live as one of their many encores at Golddiggers in Chippenham, on 4 May 1986. It was simply one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to – the sort of gig that lives forever in your memory, when the band and the audience come together as one, and the air is thick with a magic that no one can resist or deny.

I saw them do `Purple Rain` on the same tour (I think) at Salford University – and it was the same as you describe at your concert duco, magic times.
Curtis from Ohio says
Thanks Martin. Don’t get to hear much Radio 3 here, and quite enjoyed that.

I never heard this on the day. I heard the opening number Fisherman’s Blues and also heardChris Evans enquire as to who was in the band. On bass, from Muscle Shoals Alabama, David Hood. What??? Stand up and salute Evans. That’s rhythm section royalty right there! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hood
Curtis from Ohio says
When i got home, and was able to explore a little further, I also really liked the video of Tom Jones and David Gilmour doing Purple Rain. The link popped up after I watched The Waterboys video again. ( and that led to Etta James singing Purple Rain, and so on and so on…)
SteveT says
They sang it on recent UK tour too – apparently in response to Prince playing The Whole of the moon in concert which I would love to hear.

I think someone did post this, back in the troubled days when we were hiding up on Farceberk. Good to see and hear it again. This lot would do well to record a covers album…

Same tour at Leeds University… But I was working it, and 20 minutes of Purple Rain tried my patience when I was waiting with my broom. apart from that they were great.
spider-mans arch enemy says
To my old and slightly deaf ears, they were the best band in the world at the time (1985 – 1989). Especially in the period when Karl Wallinger and Steve Wickham were both in the band.

Band setting up in a small space? My pleasure.
How about a 23 piece band doing a Tiny Desk gig at NPR?
