And foregoing alcohol for weed. I’m a little apprehensive because I love them both (especially together) but choices have to be made. Do anyone else want to chime?

Musings on the byways of popular culture
I used to love hooch . Better music listening , better photo taking , more chilled but as I get older it does the opposite – I get more anxious about stuff.
Hang on a minute, Junior. Over here, “hooch” is old slang for booze, but your context makes it sound like you’re talking about dope?
also used for hooch down here
I don’t want to consult the I Ching every day but I like the option.
Alcohol. Slade, Status Quo, Oasis, driving too fast, evenings, human interaction and hangovers.
Spliff. Floyd, early Massive Attack (plus all reggae and dub), morning sunshine, driving too slowly, fighting cancer and enjoying telly.
Easy.
😂😂😂
All of it!
forgot the munchies
Okay. Fucking tooting my horn. As a drummer I can make you better. I have been blessed with inate musical insight.

I started drinking at the usual age and smoked dope for a few years during/immediately after college.
There’s a great joke I first heard from Keith Richards: ‘What do Grateful Dead fans say when they run out of dope? “What IS this awful music?”‘. That’s a good reflection on my creative faculties during those years – I was very productive, but the output was sub-standard – I thought everything I watched/read/heard/created was Amayyyzin’. These days most weed has been bred to up its THC content and, in my experience, all the worst side effects – nervousness, paranoia and extreme slowness of thinking.
While I love the social side of drinking, the hangovers get worse with each year. At least I stopped drinking spirits at about 25, other than the odd G&T. So now it’s a couple of pints/glasses of wine and that’s it. It’s a little dull to some, but I get a lot done. Currently having a dry January (mainly for cholesterol levels after Christmas) and not having a problem with it at all.
Gave up weed decades ago, not for any reason other than I just didn’t fancy it anymore. Drink a lot less than my misspent youth though I’m thinking about cutting down further, especially during the week.
Likewise. I didn’t make a conscious decision to give it up, it just kind of drifted out of my life. I’d say I have the occasional puff if there’s some going round, but I don’t think I’ve done even that for four or five years.
I haven’t done weed since my 20s and I don’t really drink except on rare special occasions. They just drifted out of my life too, like Kid.
I found that weed just turned everyone really boring. The most ordinary opinions suddenly became DEEP, MAN unless you had the misfortune to be sober when they were being expressed to you. Nothing worse than a fuckup thinking they’re being insightful. Same is often true of booze too.
I understand substances as a social lubricant early in the evening to get things moving but really drunk and stoned people are just dull (and not a little pathetic).
Once we taped ourselves ranting on on a session and when we played it back straight it was actually funny what inane rubbish we were giggling at.
😂
Notwithstanding the comments above, there is still a place for the spliff, listening to music, things that don’t require a lot of interaction.
The exception will be my coming birthday. I turn 60 and I’ve hired the local life saving club, it, most likely, will be a hot summer evening with the sun setting on the bay. I’ve got a rather good soul/blues band playing (see below)…and I shall be skinning up.
I think South Park got it right regarding spliff when they said its worst defect is that it makes you ok with being bored.
I like nothing more than spliffing up at the beach and swimming in the sea on a warm, sunny day. Would spend the rest of my life doing just that if I were rich.
Gave up spliff a long time ago – used to enjoy grass more than hash.
Every time I had a smoke it would affect the circulation in my fingers, and they would feel really cold.
Anyone else had the same thing? Not ideal if you’re the guitar player in a band (which I was at the time) so I stopped.
Thank you all lovely people.
It’s a very Canadian thing to do
I think what’s key is that both have their pluses & minuses & as we get older, most of us don’t go for caning it like we might have once.
Therefore quality is key. I don’t drink much at all, but I like what I have to be decent – good whisky & nice wine (not together).
I’ve found acquiring something worth smoking is very hard these days. Repulsive skunk is everywhere & actively unpleasant. Therefore I stretch my draw out over months when I get lucky. What once would have gone in a long weekend can last a year.
I’d love the opportunity to seek out a perfect strain like the lucky folks in the ‘free states’ of the US can – but it ain’t going to happen in Blighty – so a pure pipe once in a while it is.
It’s a good thing in the right circumstances – music & movies in my case – but not WITH booze, surely Bri?
You’ve had enough, pal.
I can remember enjoying smoking dope in the seventies. The best stuff just made EVERTHING FUNNY. That was great. Also, a mate from Canada brought some over with him that had a very interesting “great hangover” effect – I can remember waking up on a sunny morning, leaping out of bed (like totally out of character!) and really feeling exuberant that the world was a wonderful place.
On the other hand, bad experiences too. Once went to a party and the dope was laced with something (opium maybe?) that induced extreme paranoia and other effects. I can remember feeling compelled to walk backwards and (inevitably) fell over things, again and again. A few years back we smoked stuff that was so strong that my wife passed out – she slid down the wall and her eyes rolled in her head. It was really scary. Given up smoking it altogether after that.
I do like a bit of a drink still. Switched from beer to red wine about 20 years ago. What I enjoy most is that rosy glow after 3 or 4 glasses of wine. I will usually stop drinking and have a coffee at that point. Haven’t been sick or had a proper hangover for years now. Fortunately, I know I don’t have addictive tendencies. I still smoke cigarettes, but often forget to bother – never understood nicotine patches and the like.
I do have alcoholic friends who dare not touch a drop of alcohol. I witnessed one friend relapse recently. He had some bad family news and went on a bender. The most bizarre thing was he was less interested in the drink in front of him than where the next drink was coming from – lining them up on the bar before closing time. We got him back on the straight and narrow somehow. Now when we see him I don’t touch alcohol out of solidarity. Another observation of a different friend – never mix booze and cocaine by the way – it’s guaranteed to end in tears (or in a cell).
One story about us occasional dope smokers from a few years back before we gave it up. We were driving down the M4 en route to Glastonbury when an unmarked police car matched us in the outside lane and held up a sign to follow them off the motorway. We followed them (Gloucestershire Constabulary) to a huge pub car park full of other victims’ cars being stripped and searched, sniffer dogs and hordes of peelers. We were asked if we were carrying anything illegal, sniffed by dogs and my steering wheel and upholstery was swabbed and tested in a machine. We were also given a printed sheet informing us we had participated in a “traffic survey”. We passed the test and allowed to proceed. The irony was that we had a glass jar clearly marked with the legend “Dope” in the glove compartment. So, never be too conspicuous when going to a festival…
given these anecdotes @Artery, I can’t understand why you gave the herb up .Sounds like interesting times.
Just wondering why you needed to label the jar “dope” – like none of you knew what was in the jar ??
It was bought with the word printed on the lid in block capitals. Some wag’s idea of a birthday pressie.
I had a jar like that when I was a student but I kept rubber bands in it!
Thinking about it, one of the last times I partook was probably in the mid 90s in Amsterdam with a mate, and we had a couple of tokes each off a joint in a coffee shop. I don’t know what it was but it was an order of magnitude stronger than anything I’d smoked before, and my pal actually collapsed. Needless to say we were politely encouraged to get some fresh air. I think that may well have been the last time, or at least one of the last times. Wasn’t fun, and just thinking about it makes me glad I haven’t bothered since.
Never tried it until my 30s. Med school was 100% booze in my day, compulsory from dawn to dusk, and can honestly say, perhaps as a non-smoker, it never appealed, even when I was skipping lectures to go to gigs, something that was against the usual grain of my cohort. Tried it a few times when I started festivalling, but all it did was make me cough and need a poo. (Why is this never mentioned, but, in conversations and reminisces like this thread, people always recall a similar touching cloth reaction. I don’t ever recall getting ‘stoned’, either. Was far too terrified to ever try anything else, for fear of it not being what it was supposed to be, adulterated neurotoxins and brain-melters having routinely been slipped into the mix. Thankfully too I was the wrong demographic for e, and would have been too scared for the same reasons. So, simples, it’s a few tumblers of ale, red or malt for me, never enough to go beyond a glow, as I abhor hangovers and I always believe the sound advice of the chief medical officer. Ish.
How could you try it a few times and not get stoned? Were you doing a Bill Clinton and not inhaling? Were you sold parsley?
Dunno. No sense of mellow, no sense of blissing out, just the old broncho-colic reflex. Few equals maybe five.
