I used to think, when my mum said somebody was playing silly buggers, that it was actually a real game. Silly Buggers – like Hungry Hippos, I suppose.
My daughter reminded my the other day that she used to think we were talking about “McJagger” – like McNuggets or McFlurry – rather than Mick Jagger. And I remember a friend of ours saying some years ago that her little girl sang the old gospel belter as “Who built the Ark? No-one! No-one!”
Any cranky misconceptions you’d like to share?

Ayyyyyyye, McJagger, you’l hev hed yer tea, or can ye no get setisfection?
See you Jimmy, get affa ma clood.

Lagger. (Say it in your best Rab Nesbitt.)
Pffft! In Ipswich that gets you a glass full of ecstasy tablets..
‘A man is helping police with their enquiries’. How very public-spirited, I used to think.
As a child, I can vaguely remember Ted Heath as PM and being on telly a lot. He was often referred to as a “confirmed bachelor”, which I took at face value i.e. he just doesn’t want to get married.
I always wondered how he could be sure, because maybe he just hasn’t met the right lady yet. The penny dropped many years later.
I thought it was a man who was really into cup-a-soups.
…I’ll get me parka
Same idea/code as “He never married, ….” in an obituary, I believe.
When my Dad used to say “I think….” when I was quite young, I took it to mean that he’d just confirmed it as the absolute truth. Which is quite sweet, the more I think about it.
I’ve never married. Most of my friends have never married. You’re a very conventional lot, so you are.
Keeping your options open. You big tart.
To be fair Gary I did say I was harking back to the early 70s.
Harking back to the 70s? Here at The Afterword?

I used to think too, but I try not to these days.
A relative of mine used to think the National Lottery was hosted by Antina Turner. One of his favourite songs was It’s Oh So Quiet by…Bjorn Bjork.
I think he still believes both names to be accurate.
Ah, I like that. Antina Turner. Sounds like the polar opposite of the WLGTDWI hitmaker, the Anti-Tina, if you will. Which Anthea probably was, depending on your sexual politics.
My friend Paul had an Auntie Tina.
