Excelllent story about Rory Storm’s sister, Iris Caldwell, two-time FI with Paul McC. A prototype Patsy Kensitt, Iris later went on to marry a pre-Alvin Stardust Shane Fenton
I didn’t know that. I do know McCartney had an affair with Ifield’s wife or girlfriend (probably in Lewisohn book). The Beatles covering “I Remember You” was something of a joke about that I believe
The film was made when Frank Ifield was at the height of his popularity, and attempts to reproduce the success of Cliff Richard’s musicals. Ifield’s agent, Leslie Grade, suggested another one of his clients, Christopher Miles, as director. Miles was only 25 and had never made a feature film before. He said the script was to be written by the people who wrote Richard’s musicals:
Unfortunately the two writers of the Cliff pictures were not then on speaking terms, so the two halves of a rather soggy script arrived separately in the post, and not surprisingly made no sense at all. So Leslie, not one to be beaten, got an old writer friend from ITV, Lewis Greifer, saying “He’s the man, I know you’ll get on well” which we did. However, thinking up a credible vehicle for Frank, amiable and charming as he was, proved to me that ultimately you cannot make a celluloid purse out of a sow’s ear….
Like him or loathe him he was very popular around 62/63
As a 10 year old I recall seeing him on the usual tv variety shows of the time. Probably he appeared on Sunday Night at the London Palladium(?) My gran liked him.
He lived Padstow many years ago but very wisely moved away from there before all the ‘who Ray Henrys’ took over so, clearly, he was no fool.
Other than the revelation that his dad invented the Ifield Pump used in fuel systems for jet aircraft, the thing that caught my attention in the original BBC obit was that Trank left a wife, 2 children and 2 brothers one of whom was called Frank. They’ve since changed that to say they were Bob & David. Reminds me of the story I heard told on stage by the fiddler from Lau who said he knew someone whose middle names were Angus Angus. When asked why he said he was named after 2 separate uncles.

And yet another who was a Brit emigrant who found musical success from Australia.

Surprised he was only 86.
Pretty sure he was, like fellow 1960s light-entertainment mainstay, Vince Hill, either born or raised in Coventry.
RIP Frank

The original was supposedly about an affair between Johnny Mercer and Judy Garland.

Remarkable @Junior Wells.
The plot of Up Jumped a Swagman ( Aussie singer out of his depth in Swinging London)
reminds me of the Adventures of Barry Mackenzie which came out a decade later

The drawing of the Fabs on the cover looks like the work one of Mad Magazine’s artists from the early 1960s. Buggered if I know which one

Macca – looks nothing like him.

Maybe they were trying to ease the OPD ringer into the Fab Macca role a couple of tears before his “accident”
