… but I never knew there was a “Genesis” chord.
Reading about Phil Collins’ damaged nerves today (he can’t hold a drumstick in one of his hands) led me down one of those fun internet wormhole link-chases. I re-appeared, blinking in the daylight, at a Rick Beato youtube video of him deconstructing the song “Dance On A Volcano,” beloved of air drummers worldwide since 1976.
Steely Dan have their “mu” chord of course, which is a major chord with an added 2nd — some might argue it’s a 9th but what do they know? – which appears regularly in their songbook.
Not to be outdone Genesis have their own trademark chord. An example of it from the song under discussion is F with a Bflat in the bass. And dang if I don’t recognise it from Watcher Of The Skies (I think. Please don’t write in etc).
I only went there to see what the time signature was but it’s a fascinating video and his love of music shines through. I’m sure others in the series will grab you even if you hate this particular band or the genre.
I’m sure you have other examples of music nerdery so please share…
Ruth Underwood explains Zappa’s secret marimba sound.
*reaches for the Hotrats sessions discs, licks lips, grins inanely, turns up amp*
FYI I was pleased to find out that the bit in “Volcano” that I thought was “in elevens” was in fact eleven-y. So yay, go me!
Don’t know that bit. I like the bit where he goes “Mr Utley!”.
Isn’t that bit from Wacky Races?
Gentle Giant – uttermost of progsters – wrote ‘Turning Around’ in lightweight-prog ‘Genesis style’ (especially the cyclical chorus) in a bid to simplify their sound.
That keyboard player is definitely compensating for something.
Sadly, “simplify(ing) their sound” lost them some long term fans who appreciated the previous complexity – but did little to expand their fan base into the Genesis-lite masses…and they broke up shortly afterwards…
Didn’t Derek Shulman audition to be Genesis’ vocalist, after Gabriel departed? And told Collins he ought to do it?
I don’t know.
Seems a bit unlikely – Free Hand was recorded in 1975 and arguably the Giant were on something of a roll…
Can’t rule it out, of course…
Its quite possible I’m wrong. Very likely. I’ve seen the odd name mentioned as to who did audition, and there’s apparently quite a few interesting names on the list. Perhaps Shulman just said Collins should do it.
Van Morrison had some SD type studio players in the St Dominic’s Preview sessions, and quite rightly decided not to use them. The really interesting bit was that Van was into Stairway To Heaven at the time, and even considered covering it. Hard to imagine. Wonderful to imagine.
Van rejected session Dan-style musicians takes for St. Dominic.
Quite right too.
