Very interesting little article about the making of the Wah! hit (the only one?) The Story of the Blues. I’ve always found Pete Wylie to be a bit of a pillock, but he’s still good copy.

Pete had two other proper hits with Sinful and Come Back, although I think they were all credited to different names (Mighty Wah! Wah! Heat, Pete etc). It was all the rage back then – see also I Can’t Believe It’s Not Foetus etc
I saw him live a year or more back, supporting, I think, Heaven 17. He looked an odd figure, ballooning into a white trackie, but Story of the Blues was good.

He’s playing at a festival I’m going to in June and I’m really looking forward to it. He has some terrific other tunes, Better Scream (an indie hit) springs to mind, as well as the showstopper Heart As Big as Liverpool.
Very talented guy, should have had a whole string of hits. As with Spizz I don’t think the name changes helped.
Out of the “Crucial 3”, he did end up having the biggest hit of all of them though

Excellent to be reminded of this.
I probably haven’t heard it this century.
Hope was a great single, and just snuck into the top 40 if I remember.
It does have that line “and now I’ve seen with my own two eyes” in there though which has always irritated me for some reason. And I’m not even really sure why, maybe it’s the fact that he needs to mention both eyes to get it to scan right.

I bought some of the records at the time, and this reminds me I have ‘The Way We Wah!’ LP, which hasn’t had a spin for donkey’s years.
I just missed out on seeing him before Christmas. He was playing the Thornton Hough village club & it was completely sold out. The staff couldn’t sneak me in – Still, they did get me into the Henry Priestman gig, the week before & he is well worth seeing.
