My father in law was rather a Don Juan type in his heyday. One for the ladies if you will. Amongst those in his little black book was a lady with the rather 60s name of Amber. Now she adored him but as is the way (so I’m told) when a woman is that keen the man often takes a rather laid back attitude. She made several proposals to him but they all fell on deaf ears.
She finally got the message and moved on. Several years later she gave birth to Guy Ritchie and the rest is history.
So I could have (kind of) been Madges brother in law.
Any other sliding doors moments?

Not in the same league, but my Grandfather was selected to be scrum half in a final match trial for the full Welsh national rugby team, the game was called off because of bad weather and when it eventually took place he was not re-selected.
Not in a good way. I have a relative on my dad’s side who waited to get a new suit for his trip to New York and took a different ship to the one originally intended.

That’s fascinating. One of my nans neighbours also drowned.
Reminds me of a friend’s story. He claims that in the mid 60s, his mum was driving home one night outside London when she saw a bloke standing by a broken down sports car. She gave him a lift to the nearest town to call for help. He asked to meet her again for a date to thank her. She agreed, not knowing much about this bloke apart from he was an American called Steve in the UK for a few weeks for work.
Anyway few weeks later they go for a drink at the Spaniards Inn in Hampstead and are having a nice time when he goes to the loo and a couple of women on the next table come over to her all agog. “That’s Steve McQueen! Steve McQueen!” Friend’s mum didn’t have a clue. She politely turned down Steve’s offer of a second date and went on to marry my friend’s dad, a chartered accountant from Guildford.
Not often a chartered accountant gets the girl over Steve McQueen.
Or, speaking as a chartered accountant, over anyone…
As a teenage schoolgirl in Ware, my mum knocked around with local lads Unit 4+2 from nearby Cheshunt. At one point she was stepping out with the bassist, but then Concrete & Clay became a hit, the band went on tour, and she did not.
Unfortunately, she joined a rambling club and, the next year, met my biological father (who liked C&W). And, I’ll moderate my language so as not to speak ill of the dead, was an absolute bellend.
My wife’s first serious boyfriend played in Tubeway Army. She went to Top of the Pops and everything. Then apparently Gary said “Dump her, she’s not good for our image”.
He didn’t say that exactly though did he Lodes ?
The exact words Gary told him to use were “Me, I disconnect from you.”
chapeau
Beautiful, Freddy.
