The Conch’s great post on Led Zep at Sheffield got me thinking about bands that took off after I saw them.
Being “down here” the choice is limited. I expect JC and Thep will have a long list, but anyway here are 2.
You Am I were quite popular in Australia and they were doing a show in a Church Hall in Newtown Sydney. Under ten bucks. Before thery played this other band came, sullen, tight ,wam bam song after song with no chit chat til eventually the front man called Julian spoke. /he had a New York accent. Yep – the Strokes. Seems like Tim Rogers had met them in NY and suggested they come over. They were good.
Lunchtime upstairs at Monash Student Union having a joint and a sandwich. A band starts performing wild sort of bouffant haircuts, olde worlde tweed suits, a bloke playing spoons and all quite eccentric. It was Split Enz’s first show across the ditch. I became a big fan.
