Somewhat related to the feeling old thread down there…..
Scanning through the birthdays list in todays Times I see that….
Chubby Checker is 85 years old
Lindsey Buckingham is 77 years old
How did that happen ? I always assumed that Chubby Checker was one of the pioneers of Rock & Roll – i.e. before The Beatles. How can he only be 8 years older than Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, who came to our attention in 1975ish.
Any other surprises ?

Debbie Harry is 81, she was in her mid to late 30s at her pop star peak
Only three years younger than the Mahavishnu… and three years older than Lulu.
Mahalulu – the tour no-one is asking for.
Oh, I don’t know: I’d buy that for a dollar!
‘You know it makes me want to SHOUT… in 13/8…’
Lindsey Buckingham now looks like his own granny.
Petula Clark is 93.
He does look a bit like a drag queen. They nearly all end up having surgery to try and look younger but just look weird.
I didn’t recognise a recent pic of Smokey Robinson.
He looks like he’s been pulled out of a fire. Barry Manilow is another freaky looking one.
And Madonna, sadly. I saw her star turn at the recent MTV Awards. While the music is still great, her eerily smooth appearance just looks… odd.
Would that be on the cover of his recent album Gasms?
Charlie Harper, leader of UK Subs (first EP release: CID, 1978) is only 3 years younger than Chubby
And Chuck Berry would have been 100 this year. Which feels about right, if still a shock.
So would John Coltrane.
Miles Davis too.
Johnny Marr has become the Dot Cotton de nos jours, having taken the baton from Ronnie Wood.
He should write a book. The Smiths: Just Four Men
Sting is 75 today, Andy Summer remains 83
I am 61
I thought of you yesterday when I saw Cronos from Venom had passed.
Still here lurking then…welcome back to the thread.
I never liked Venom and my days of listening to NWOBHM have now passed as I entered my 60s.
I still don’t see the point of speedway though as a sport but still agree with you that basketball is the most boring sport in the world.
American football is the most boring sport in the world. Second place: football.
Is golf a sport? You play a game of golf not a sport of golf anyway that’s my choice.
Not boring, just lacking in drama and only open to people seven foot and over.
Ian Hunter is 87.
That’s three years older than Hank Marvin, 84.
Jimmy Osmond is 63.
That’s Little Jimmy Osmond, to you, kid!
DJ Pete Murray was 101 last week
I was going to add that someone else will be 101 in December but I don’t want to tempt fate.
My favourite from when The High Priest of Pathos still walked among us: ‘If Elvis Presley was alive today, he’d be 18 months younger than Leonard Cohen.’
I heard Jeffrey “honest, guv” Archer on the radio the other day and was surprised he was still around, aged 86. Oh wait.
I edited his first book, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, in 1976 (half a century ago, Christ I’m old). He was an opiniated prick who had to be Right All The Time. In this case he was wrong more often than not.
