Fuck me. I got proper goosebumps about once every 5 seconds of that, and the goosebumps from the last few seconds haven’t subsided yet.
JJ Abrams can do little wrong in this sort of film, as far as I can tell. And they’ve sidelined Lucas entirely, totally rejecting his story arcs and only keeping him around out of “consultant” politeness. I really, really want this to redeem the franchise.
In other news, I watched The Phantom Menace last night for the first time in at least 10 years. It’s still bad, but it’s nowhere close to the embarrassing car crash I remembered.
Did you manage another watch of “Attack of the Clones”.
It used to be my eldest’s favourite film when he was 5. That and “Muppets Take Manhattan” – those two on a permanent loop.
I have fond memories of Muppets Take Manhattan but even the mention of this utter dog of a film or the sight of Jar Jar Binks sends me into murderous rages.
If you thought Frozen Fever has been going on for ages…wait until the Disney machine gets behind this. They just have a small matter of the new Avengers film to milk first.
My little boy has got into Star Wars in a big way over the past few months. It’s pretty much all he’s into at the moment. It was his fifth birthday on Monday and his presents were practically all Star Wars based.
I’ve recently watched all the films again with him and whilst my love of the first two and slight disappointment with Return of the Jedi remain the same, I’ve changed my opinion on the other three. The Phantom Menace is far worse than I thought after I first watched it, but the other two prequels are actually quite good. And, being a big Hammer fan, I do get a kick out of the fact that my little boy plays with action figures of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.
I’ve just shown him the trailer before he went to sleep and excited just doesn’t cover it. Hopefully it will be a certification that will allow 5 year olds to watch it, otherwise there will be a disappointed little boy waiting for the DVD release!
My most recent claim to fame is being involved in the making of this (very) short film starring Daisy Ridley a couple of years ago. It was for a competition to make a horror film consisting of four shots of four seconds long. It’s all very silly π
I recall that the trailer for The Phantom Menace was one of the first I ever downloaded on the internet. It took about a day to come down on dial-up and was mostly Peter Serafinowicz and Ian McDiarmid having a chat but that was exciting too.
JJ’s Star Trek filums have been mostly ace (Simon Pegg aside) and this just looks aces too
Am I the only one around here who regards the prospect of a new Star Wars film with complete indifference? But then, I’ve never seen any of the films all the way through.
The best film George Lucas was ever involved with is, of course, American Graffiti.
@kaisfatdad judging by my experience with a real seven year old last night, the effect of showing it to them just before bedtime is to wind them up something rotten and then for me to get icy looks from The Light every time she shouts downstairs “I can’t sleep because I’m too excited about Star Wars”.
I got the original trilogy for my kids a couple of years ago, but have steered them away from episodes 1-3, so far successfully. My conclusion – they like the first three but are not so bowled over as to be obsessive – in any case their current obsession is the Simpsons and there are loads of those to be getting on with.
Saw the original on its release as a tiny little urchin. Thrilled skinny (no mean feat)
However I had no interest in The Empire Strikes Back at all for reasons lost in the mists of Alderaan.
All that changed with Return Of The Jedi. Due mainly to seeing Carrie Fisher in a gold bikini. *takes a short moment*
Saw The Phantom Menace on release in a cinema on Union Square, New York City. Get in! The best part being the fact we were sat in a cinema on Union Square in New York City. It was about a trade embargo. Go, George! Mind the Pod Race was alright.
Saw the remaining two, whatever they were called with diminishing interest and slight disbelief at the leaden dialogue and the obvious way ‘Anni’ (Tomorrow! I’ll turn to the Dark Side, tomorrow!) was heading for the clarts.
These trailers are the mutt’s nuts though. I’m back on board. I think.
Looks rather fab. If our inner 8 year olds feel like that, imagine how it is for real 8 year olds?
This film is going to be the talk of the playground for many months.

Best thing to come from it was Weird Al’s take on a classic song – it’s better than Madge’s version

I will not believe this is actually good until we’re at least 45 minutes into the real thing.
The grim legacy of Phantom Menace lives on.

I think I just peed my pants a little…
Do you all realise that Jar Jar Binks is going to be in it?
(actually, I don’t know that. Just shaking the tree, boss)

Oh and the new Star Wars looks great, but it’s the use of Luke Skywalker’s theme that gives me goosebumps. Oh, and seeing Han and Chewie again!

OOAA.
“Who cut the cheese?”
No wait, that was Star Wars

“Chewy? We’re home.”
FUCK YEAH!
Have just realised that you lot aren’t talking about a new Star TREK movie. I agree with Penny.
I’ve never seen Star Wars.
Unless you saw it when you were were under twelve in the seventies, I wouldn’t bother. It’s hardly The Burbs.
I’m probably in a minority of one, but I’m actually more excited for this:
Looks like it’s going to lean heavily on The Dark Knight Returns. Homina homina homina.
We’ll make that a minority of two @bingo-little, I didn’t know that was coming, my pulse is going to take some calming down!
Zack Snyder!? How can they hand over the most important franch… etc etc
Note the subtitle “Dawn Of Justice” – I smell a Justice League franchise in the offing…
Looks good does Bat v Soop, as does Star Wars. Should be too old to enjoy this stuff BUT I love it. Mind you I thought `Dune` was good.
