I am fascinated by the stats surrounding Wordle Starter Words. My nephew is currently based somewhere deep in California’s Silicon Valley. I asked him the following “If you use a genuinely random starter each day but then subsequently apply (non superhuman) logic to your next guesses, what 1. statistically are your chances of scoring a birdie 2. will your average score be”?
He ran a programme yesterday afternoon – apparently it took three hours to finish using every single word in the Wordle dictionary (2300?)
Each eighteen holes = 6 birdies but pars, bogies and the rare disaster will mean an average score of 3.78 (overall worldwide average is 3.8).
Incidentally, his programme suggested YEAST as the “best” starter with SPARE, WORLD, SCORN and DEPOT very close (like 0.02% range) behind.
Like what we all know by now, he was at pains to point out that a safe starter does not guarantee a good result every day but in the long run it will produce better results than completely random ones. He also said what really counts is not the starter but how you play after your first guess.
Amazeballs, eh?
YEAST v STARE. R is more common than Y so I’m not so sure. I think it’s also about having a good word if your opening word comes up blank. The rest is about figuring out options and then trying to work out what an American Wordle setter is likely to go for. Without overthinking it.
I put a link up to an article earlier in the year and that suggested TARSE is the best word to use.
