Hello folks,
How you doing?
I’m back on the Afterword site after a few technical difficulties and the most turbulent year relationship-wise since I was about 17…
I have been carrying on with this ridiculous project anyway in my absence from this here forum – now up to issue 26.

Hey Gavin,
Good to see you have found your way back to us. Also good to catch up with your labour of Sisyphus – always fascinating.
Gavin (Mark 2)
Hey Mr H, the podcast has missed you too. Welcome anytime
Welcome back Hogg!!
Thank you Fifer, DogFacedBoy and Twang 😉
Would love to do another podcast soon Mr DFB – am moving to Sheffield to start a new life next month. By the end of the Summer I should be back into some kind of routine and ready to pod again – like we did last Summer.
Good to see you again Gavin, welcome back onboard.
Good luck in Sheffield Gavin, good to hear from you.
Good to have you back, Mr Hogg. I’ve missed your good work. Keep it up & best of luck for the future!
You lovely bunch of people – thanks for the nice comments. Wish I’d come back to the fold a bit sooner now.
Another issue covered – almost a quarter through this ridiculous project now.
AND in other news I’ve just moved to Sheffield.

Seeing as I’ve found my Afterword password again (I must have been through more of these than anyone else) – I may as well let ya know that issue #28 is now up. There’s a scan all about forgotten albums that’s a diverting read.
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
And finally, I’ll be interviewing Paul DuNoyer on Saturday 29/08. If anyone has any burning questions for him relating to the magazine, please let me know.
Ta!

https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Thanks, looking forward to reading the Tori interview.
Issue 31 – includes Andrew Collins’ celebration of ‘New Yorker’ magazine
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Great project; looking forward to getting stuck into it. Cheers!
Cheers Ewen – hope you find something you enjoy rereading.
Issue 32 now covered – includes a focus on post-millennial literary genres.
wholehoggblog.wordpress.com
Issue 33 now up – includes handy film critic decoding information
Issue 34 now under the blogging belt – the scanned article this time is a Dr. Who special by Andrew Harrison
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Issues 35 and 36 are now on the blog with scans of Paul Du Noyer’s review of ‘Ariel’ and an article on the development of the ‘iPod Phone’. We’ve come a long way baby.
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Review of Aerial you say? I’m in. Will be interesting to read now that it’s been thoroughly digested over the last 10 years.
37 and 38 are now up – includes a nice smash Hits retrospective by Mark Ellen and a piece on the state of British folk music in 2006
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Marvellous!
Speaking of Word retro-ness, at this morning’s Daylight Music one of the bands performing was Left With Pictures, and there behind the drumkit, on the Union Chapel stage, none other than Word Magazine sorcerer’s apprentice Alex Gold..
Issue 39 now up
Featuring a tribute to the late, great Linda Smith by David Quantick
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Re-reading these reminds me what’s missing from my current magazine selection(s).
Diversity.
Mojo and Vive Le Rock are great at what they cover, but what chance an interview with Joe Boyd and an article about Linda Smith in either of those two?
I agree Mr D. It was the thing I always loved about Word. I’m partial to a Mojo every now and again but the breadth of what they cover in comparison to Word falls well short.
It was the New Yorker for the Smash Hits generation.
Which sadly is why Mojo is still around and The Word isn’t.
Issue 40
Features Sylvia Patterson’s interview with Pete Doherty at the heights – or depths – of the craziness
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Finally finished transcribing my chat with David Hepworth – lots of talk about the demise of Word, the Massive and ‘1971’. Hope it entertains.

That’s a great interview, Hogg. I’m really impressed with your questions, knowledgable and probing at the same time.
Really good interview WH, thanks very much for posting this. It was sad how Word slipped away in its last couple of years. You could see they were trying everything – and sometimes making it worse as a result – but the market was changing and there was nowhere to go. Interesting that DH says he should have closed it sooner.
Great stuff, Gavin! Read it earlier on (like Junior via Twitter), and found it really interesting. Who’s next on the interview list?
There’s still quite a few to do though I guess I’ve got the main people now with Paul, Mark and Dave. Still to come at some point would hopefully be: Andrew Harrison, Kate Mossman, Frazer Lewry, Andrew Collins, Mike Seventies Johnson, Nige Tassell and James Medd.
Aaah great. Just read it via Heppers tweet
Reckon you should post a separate thread and bump it to get more exposure for it on the blog.
Excellent read – most thorough interview with Hep I’ve read yet. As JW says, I’d post a new thread.
Fascinating read – thanks. I had no idea they were under that much pressure for so long. We happy few were lucky indeed to enjoy the fruits of their unrewarding labours for so long.
Thanks for all the nice comments everyone. As a few people have suggested it, I’ll post the interview on a fresh thread. Much obliged.
The next installment (Word #42) has arrived with an article by Trevor Dann on the end of Top Of The Pops.
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
I’m now 36% through the project and at this rate I’ll be done by sometime in 2022/23. If we’re all still here that is.
Word #43 (Sep 2006) now up.
Features fascinating interview with Bob Lefsetz about the future of the music industry
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/2017/01/08/word-43/
Issues 44 and 45 have since been added
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Can J ask a cheeky question? Have you come across a letter I wrote at some point? It’s a fairly distinctive one, calling Rod Lifdle a lot of rude names. I’m quite proud of the fact that when I sent it, I got an email from Mark E saying they’d print it, but they’d have to edit it a bit. But the bit I liked best was when he said that when he’d read it out in the office, it had received a round of applause. I’d quite like to find it again.
Will do!
Issue 46 which features a long Tom Waits interview is now up on the site.
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Just discovered this – superb!
Excellent work Mr Hogg!
Welcome on board Stephen G! There’s plenty for you to look back through…and plenty more to come.
Issue #47 with a hot take on new-fangled YouTube now up.
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
It’s all go – I should be interviewing Andrew Harrison in a few days and have possible interviews with Andrew Collins and Kate Mossman set up too for later in the year.
If you like the project I’m doing and want to do something lovely, I’m running my 1st ever marathon at the end of September if you fancy bunging me a pound or 2. Much obliged if you do.

Issue #48 now up – includes a long piece by David Hepworth on record shops
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Andrew Collins now interviewed – I’ll probably get that up in the new year.
Peace and love people, peace and love x
Great stuff, Gavin.
I’m really glad you do this, Gavin – I enjoy it a lot, cheers. The Andrew Harrison interview was great.
Issue 49 with a piece on musical nostalgia by Andrew Harrison
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
issue 51 now up – with people getting in a tangle over Pentangle on the letters page
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/2018/02/24/word-51/
Some of Colin H’s best work there. 🙂
Issues 52 and a short interview with Rhodri Marsden are now online for the curious.
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Issues 53 and 54 are now up with scans of Leonard Cohen and Van Morrison interviews.
Issue 55 coming soon folks!
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
Just a quick update to say that I’ve recently posted issues 56 & 57 (with a scan about Spooks) – and a few months ago put up a short interview with Pete Paphides.
You can scroll down through the posts here: https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
It’s been a busy time lately but I’m determined to keep going with this ridiculous project.
All power to your ridiculous elbow!
Spooks is it… probably looks like The Man From UNCLE now. Or Dangermouse.
Issue 58 is now up with scans of Andrew Collins on In Rainbows and Charles Shaar Murray on Blade Runner: The Final Cut.
https://wholehoggblog.wordpress.com/
In the next day or 2 there’ll be a meaty interview with Word freelancer Nige Tassell.
UPUPUPUPUPUPUPUP!!!!!!!
