Honeyblood + PINS

More of a double bill than headliner/support this was a chance to catch up again with a couple of bands first seen last year. PINS are a Mancunian 5 piece playing punky-pop with a touch of northern sturm und drag detectable even before the Joy Division cover. They are obviously quite persuasive – first time I saw them (here) was supporting Wire who they joined for a thrashing encore of Drill – have Wire ever done this before? Next up were Honeyblood – 2 piece with a rather good album just out. Quite in yer face songs drugs, gangs, vilolence (plus some Corrs) but rather charming banter – tonight it was singer/guitarist Stina Tweedale’s birthday so she was got a round of Happy Birthday from the audience and regular presents from drummer/co-pilot Cat Myers. Mittens and fluffy slippers. Aww. And for the encore – why its PINS joining them on stage again. Obviously party time.

Sold out. Young Guns. Smily face. (No sign of Jeff – busy night in Briz)

It made me think..

Was tempted not to go out after a rubbish day but very glad I did. Time to listen to Unknown Pleasure again. BND!

  5. On the last train home after there were a few blokes the spit of Phillip Hammond in Sisters of Mercy t-shirts. I think they also played last night – otherwise that is a bit weird and scary. I grow old, I grow old…

  6. Thanks for this review. I’m going to see Honeyblood at the Cambridge Junction on Monday.

    From a practical point of view…I half-heartedly tossed out, “Wanna come with?” to my twelve-year-old daughter, and damned if she didn’t say, “Sure!” I am quite chuffed, but now a little bit concerned: Were you aware of it being ear-destroyingly loud – especially for delicate young ears? (Buzzcocks nearly did it for me last month.) I have got concert ear-plugs just in case – would they be a sensible option even at the risk of plummeting the coolness factor?

      I found the volume at the Fleece quite acceptable the other night – have been to other gigs at that venue that were way too loud but not this one. Both bands are an excellent choice for your 12 year old by the way – make sure you get there in time to see PINS! Hope you both enjoy it – especially daughter – let us know what you think.

        • Thank you so much for your reply, Anton – very reassuring. I’ll take the ear-plugs just in case but you have relieved me of some unnecessary stress.

          We do have a clutch of guitars in the house – one small one even resides in her room. She has toyed with it occasionally. I once heard her quietly plinking on it one afternoon unbidden. But she hasn’t ventured much beyond that. We’ll see.

Afterword Wire correspondent here – yes Wire have occasionally had the support band back on stage to do a final number – usually Drill or Pink Flag as they have only one note and anyone can jam on that! Was hoping to catch Honeyblood & Pins in Manchester but it clashes with something else and sold out anyway.

  8. So, went to see them at the Junction 2 in Cambridge (ace venue, btw) with my daughter (12 – her first gig proper) and I would grade it an all-round success. It was her dad’s music after all, which she was familiar with by proxy, but she appeared to thoroughly enjoy the experience.
