@Mick50s Do you mean a hard drive plugged into your computer, or a NAS drive? No experience of the latter, but if you mean the former, Home Sharing is pretty flaky and often seems to turn itself off in my experience.
You need to make sure HS is turned on in two places: System Preferences (make sure File Sharing is checked) and iTunes Preferences (Share my library checked). It sometimes takes a couple of goes for the Apple TV to see the computer, but it gets there in the end.
Incidentally, I’ve just been given the local version of a Roku box by the people we get our phone/internet service from which has a USB socket, so I’ve just plugged the hard disk containing all my movies straight into that. MUCH better than Home Sharing.
Thanks for response – turned out that updating to latest iTunes solved it – though i don’t understand why… But the Roku option sounds worth investigating.
Certainly with Mac OS versions of iTunes, if something odd happens to it that restarting doesn’t cure, it is worth reinstalling the latest version of iTunes (after ensuring you’re backed up).
Reinstalling overwrites a lot of files, some of which may have become corrupted, and which are causing the problem.

Hope this helps!
