Despite me originally sneering at the thought of once more buying Beatle songs I already have two or three times over I am tempted to get the “1” dvd. The problem is I can’t find out exactly what is on it……yes I know it has the 27 songs that are on the cd but looking at the outer sleeve it says it has a running time of 200+ minutes. Are there alternative videos maybe?
Perhaps someone could kindly let me know?
I have looked elsewhere but all I can seem to find are glowing reviews for the 1+ blue ray grubbins…..

The deluxe sets have an extra DVD or Blu-ray with 23 more videos including Strawberry Fields, A Day in the Life and many others. This is the 1 plus set, google will give you all the details
Sorry I probably could have worded it better! I understand the 1 plus sets and what is on them (more or less!)
It is the ‘basic’ DVD that I am thinking about but don’t understand why it has such a long running time.
There are some ‘extras’. Macca’s commentary on a few of the videos and Ringo does introductions for a few too. Even adding them, 200 minutes does seem a lot for one DVD. Unless they’re including the CD running time in that figure?
Ringo’s video intros are hilarious stuff. You think someone would have showed him how to show videos full screen on his monitor

The regular DVD will have a running time of about 80 mins I think, same as CD
My blu-ray has a total running time of 205 minutes – that’s 2 discs with 50 tracks, plus 5 intros by Ringo (10-12 mins total) & 4 commentaries by Paul. Single disc DVD won’t be 200 minutes – roughly 84 mins. Tracklistings can be found here:

As the greatest ‘video’ ever is ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ you kinda need the extended one with that on it.
Bung it on a Xmas wants list.
Ipto facto – ‘free’!
I only have the single DVD but there are a few revelations.
Ringo’s “commentary” is a waste of time, consisting of him looking at a giant Apple Mac screen and making fatuous, glib comments about three of the clips.
Macca’s commentary (same three songs) is better and during the Penny Lane voice-over he reveals that while the street scenes (firemen, buses etc) were filmed in Liverpool, all footage of the band was filmed in and around London.
I always thought the “1” album was a deeply flawed project from the start and track inclusion seems almost arbitrary. Singles charted differently in every major territory and many songs were issued as singles in some countries but not others.
Love Me Do is included for example, but not Please Please Me. Neither got to number one in the UK, but Love Me Do was their lowest charting UK Parlophone single during the band’s lifetime. Although I’m sure it reached number one later in the US or Australia.
Yesterday wasn’t even released as a single in the UK first time around and Penny Lane (not a number one in UK) is included, but not the other half of the double A-Side Strawberry Fields.
We do have both sides of another double A-Side Day Tripper/We can Work It Out however.
Come Together was only ever a B-side in the UK, but is included (as a new, and frankly not very good, video) presumably as part of a US double A-side with Something.
It’s all very confusing.
It is a bit arbitrary. In the US charts were also based on airplay not just sales and Penny Lane got to no. 1 and Strawberry Fields only got to 8 (I think). Please Please me made no. 1 on all UK charts except the one the BBC later used and was retrospectively demoted to 2. Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields was a no. 1 in the UK on the NME chart …
Otherwise all the songs on the album officially made no. 1 somewhere (e.g.Love Me Do in US)
I think they were number ones on the ‘official’ chart in either the UK or the US. Love Me Do reached number one in the US a couple of years after its initial release. Yesterday was an official single in the US and reached number one.
Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane famously stalled at number 2 in the UK. In the US, they include radio plays, which explains why each track of the double A attained different chart positions.
Both the other double As, Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out and Something/Come Together (I’m pretty sure the latter was a double A in the UK) did reach number one this side of the water.
But, yes. The whole thing is a contrivance to create more sales. They wanted a greatest hits filling a single CD. Love Me Do, Please Please Me and Strawberry Fields get a peculiar result given their respective qualities but I’m chuffed Ballad Of John And Yoko is on there.
It does illustrate John’s waning contribution and Paul’s dominance after 1965. A side of a single is where the best song goes.
You’re right. Something/Come Together WAS a double A side in UK, but we (well, me at least) seem to have forgotten that was the case. However, Something stalled at #4 in the UK, their worst singles showing since Love Me Do.
“Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane famously stalled at number 2 in the UK” yes, thanks so much to Engelbert for breaking that run of 11 UK chart toppers.
But did you know that John McLaughlin played on the single version of ‘Release Me’? (In homage to another current thread, it may not be well-known that Engle’s LP version of ‘Release Me’ was different.)
That said, it doesn’t make the pill any easier to swallow, does it?
A-sides are where you put the most commercial songs, not necessarily the best. That’s what I don’t like about 1. It’s rather unrepresentative, as such biggest hit collections tend to be. The red and blue collections offer a better idea of what the band were about.
And I expect ALL the Beatles Parlophone/EMI singles were number one at least somewhere in the world, so the omissions are all the more baffling.
Bowie has number 4
Bowie still smoking there, I see.
This will be circa Hours… at the fin de siecle judging by the hair.
BTW that’s from the Rutles 2 DVD extras and is funnier in 30 seconds than the whole of that shameful shite from Eric “Sued Myself” Idle
Funnily enough I was wondering today whether I should be putting the 1 DVD on the Christmas list. No interest in the CD – I’ve got all of those songs – but is the DVD worth having?
Well, the clips have been cleaned up and look better than they ever have.
The sound on 5.1 is also the best I’ve ever heard the Beatles.
Thank you all who replied – you have helped me to decide and I am going to resist this now ( I would imagine BlueBoy will do the same!)
Funny isn’t it? The power of advertising and glowing reviews. I have the Past Masters 2009 issue , the full albums 2009 issues and the Red and Blue doubles from the late 80’s…….oh! I have the Anthology DVDs from a few years ago too. I have only got to about disc four! There I was ‘tempted’ to re-buy what I sort of already have!
Mug!
There’s be a 2CD collection of sparkling Quintessence unearthings along in the New Year, daff. Save your money…
