Hitchin Folk Club has basically had anyone who is anyone in the folk world on their stage over the years, and the always impeccable sound, mixed by Kieron, has also been recorded. He is opening up this treasure trove (with artist approval) so that you can buy live sets for a fiver and he will send the money direct to the artist and send you the audio. It’s delightfully folky and a bit hand made which I like even more. See communiqué below and fill your boots!
DOWNLOAD A CONCERT FOR £5 Hi Folks
Times are certainly hard for all of us now, with the self-employed probably facing more uncertainly than most. With all venues now shut down all the wonderful singers who have entertained us for so long have had their income cut to nothing at a stroke. It has struck us that there may be a little we can do to help. Since the late 80’s I have been recording concerts at Hitchin Folk Club, originally on cassette, then mini disc, next digital recorder and now directly onto iPad. If we were to offer whole concerts to download for £5 it could take a meal out of the equation for our beleaguered musician friends. It could be as basic as that.
I put the idea out on Facebook and received lots of positive reaction from both singers and audience. So the plan is, if you would like to have a concert, or lots of concerts to get through these live music-less times, let me know what you fancy. If I’ve got it I will, firstly check with the artiste to see if they are game to join the scheme, then I’ll ask you for £5 and send you the concert by WeTransfer or Dropbox and send the money to the artist, hopefully as simple as that. To kick off I have prepared concerts by the artistes who have already told me they would like to be involved, but after that it’s up to you. The recordings are limited to the concerts I did the sound for so, regrettably no Chris & Julie, Bully Wee, Artisan, Huw & Tony Williams, Tannahill Weavers, Isaac Guillory, Show of Hands or anyone else who did their own sound. It does, however, include most of 20 years doing the sound at The EntShed in Bedford and three Kimpton Festivals. Of course, the beauty of these concert recordings is that, unlike most live CDs, you get the lot, the banter, the jokes, the occasional heckles, the feeling of being there, maybe you were!
Initial concerts, ready to download now include Miranda Sykes, who you may know especially needs our support at the moment. Cathryn Craig & Brian Willoughby if you like your music with a country feel. If your taste is Irish music there are concerts by Craobh Rua, Daioiri Farrell and a recording from 1999 Mayfest of Jackie McAuley Band. If you have been coming to the club for years and years you might like to be reminded of a night with Johnny Silvo and Diz Disley, or Derek Brimstone, or one of the first I did with Les Barker & Lesley Davies. Then there was that wonderful concert in 2008 with Karine Polwart, Corrina Hewat & Annie Grace and the first songwriters’ circle we did with Boo Hewerdine, Brooks Williams & Emily Slade that spawned State of the Union and Emily’s Me & G EP. Martin Simpson, Tinderbox, Edwina Hayes, Dave Ellis & Boo Howard and many, many more. I still have to ask permission of most of the acts, but will wait until I have had a request for one of their concerts to spread the load. Take a look at the Who played when? page on our website from about 1989, see if there is anything you fancy. I can’t remember what the criteria was for me to record a night. A lot more acts carried their own PA in those days, but I’m sure I remember recording nights that I haven’t found so, maybe, there is another box of tapes somewhere! While I am writing this I am listening to Brooks Williams 1994 and Martin Carthy 1998 while I am digitising them, classic!
Concerts by artists that have already given their permission that are sitting in my dropbox ready to go are Brooks Williams & Steve Tilston, Brooks Williams solo, Cathryn Craig & Brian Willoughby, Daria Kulesh album launch concert at Dunton, Edwina Hayes, Martin Simpson, Miranda Sykes and the Songwriters’ Circle with Boo Hewerdine, Brooks Williams & Emily Slade and Emily Slade solo at Kimpton Festival. Others can be sent by WeTransfer.
Please send your requests by email, not Facebook or Messenger please. I am going to have to keep close track of who has asked for what etc and I think I can do that best with emails that I can shuffle into folders, email@example.com. I will keep a list of what is available with permission on the Hitchin Folkus page on our website, the rest is up to you to request!
I do hope I haven’t forgotten anything and it all runs like clockwork!
