My digitising of vintage off-air reels continues. Here’s something that doesn’t appear to be on the recent Pink Floyd box set (although there are five other versions therein), ‘Apples and Oranges’, a stray track from their first Top Gear session that was held over till 5.11.67 for broadcast. I’m not a Flod buff myself, but I’m sure there are plenty out there who might enjoy hearing this.

Hmmm, problem with the link. I’ll try again…

Nope… it just isn’t uploading. How curious… sorry if anyone wanted to hear it…
What about the time Zappa played with them (Interstellar Overdrive at 7.08)

Turned out that Soundcloud was recognising the waveform as copyright to EMI (believing it to be the 2007 remastered Apples & Oranges original single version). So perhaps it was the single, played on Top Gear in late 1967 – but on a reel of tape coincidentally along with all the other tracks from a genuine Top Gear session.
What are you talking about, Colin?
Oh, sorry… I’m digitising a number of reels containing off-air recordings from BBC shows such as Top Gear and Night Ride in the late 60s. I posted two or three tracks (Fleetwood Mac, Cream) on the ‘Come back Johnny C’ thread recently. I was trying to post here one of the Pink Floyd second session tracks, ‘Apples & Oranges’, that was missing in that version from the recent PF box set – just for the interest of anyone who might care to hear it – but the only way I know to host audio tracks is Soundcloud. Soundcloud clearly has a waveform-identifying method of detecting aggressively protected copyrights – of which the PF catologue must be one. It has had no problem with Cream or Fleetwood Mac. Consequently, the link in the original post does not work, nor the reposting attempt – the upload was automatically rejected by Soundcloud’s software/algorithm/whatever-it-is.
If I had any way of contacting PF, they’d be most welcome to the lot – for their next box set. I’ve managed to return several sessions in WAV form thus far to artists who are rather easier to drop a line to. I’m waiting to see if Denny Laine reads his Facebook messages. His Electric String Band await.
Here’s one ‘The Man’ isn’t bothered about: Phil Yost, an LP track with typical Peel intro, circa June 1968:

I’m not sure of the legality of it, but an alternative file sharing site to consider is mega.nz.
Thanks for the explanation.
How about writing to Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Somewhere in the UK? The postman is bound to know where he lives.
Third Houseboat Recording Studio along,
The Thames,
Londonshire.
Nah, here’s his house, lookit:

He could just have dragged the houseboat up onto the beach.
First Houseboat along,
The Beach,
Hove, actually.
Thanks for trying. I’m not really a Floyd buff (more of a Syd fan), but I’ve quite a few bootlegs and never heard of ‘Apples and Oranges’ as part of a BBC session, so maybe it was the single.
Annoyingly, the Early Years box set does use an inferior, off-air recording of that late 67 session (with a truncated take of ‘Pow R Toc H’) when there are better and complete versions knocking around.
According to Ken Garner’s BBC sessions books it was denitely part of their second TG session recording but was broadcast a couple of weeks later than the rest of the tracks recorded (a common occurrence in those days).
Try bunging it on Mixcloud with a few other tracks and making a “Colin H show” out of it. They pay royalties so not much of an issue as Soundcloud.
Here’s a plan – if there’s a particular Floyd buff on the AW who has the patience for all this IT stuff, I’ll burn them a CD of all the PF stuff and they can upload it and share it around.
Ooh I would jump at this but don’t think I have the time. Plus there will be more eager Floyd buffs out there.
Sheesh, is no one else volunteering for this? Right Colin, hit me with it. I’ll see what I can do, but I’m happy for someone else to take over instead if they are more eager.
What are we actually talking about? A CD of sound files from Pink Floyd BBC sessions? To be uploaded to a file sharing site? I’m too intrigued not to have a go. Do you want me to message you my address or something?
Yep, send me your address in a message Arthur and eight or nine Floyd tracks (most/all of their first two Top Gear sessions from this hitherto untapped source) are yours – WAV files burned to CD – as is the responsibility to share them with whomever wishes, or to chuck them through the window of Gilmour’s houseboat or whatever.
Deal!
