Yep, really like that! You do have to compromise a bit on a birthday playlist…I made one yesterday for myself (my birthday’s this week so we had quite a few of the family over last night to celebrate it) and I doubt they’d have found much in common with my usual post punk and sixties psych type preferences!
Yes there were definitely compromises made. I went to a 21st a few months ago and the birthday boy likes a bit of loud guitar/thrash metal and enjoyed those tracks but it cleared the dance floor, sending people outside and I thought to myself “hmmm…some of my music would probably do that” so I played safe.
Well I don’t think any of them would be on my birthday playlist but have a brilliant time. I had a get together of old mates who I shared a house with right after uni and did this playlist of stuff we would party to BITD.

Another great list! Potential minor improvement? Swap out the ‘Addicted To Love’ track from Palmer for ‘Every Kind Of People’ (i.e. backed by the Feat), and change ‘Two Trains’ to ‘Dixie Chicken’.
Agree with both though there was an element of design by committee here! It used to have Love is just the great pretender by Animal Nightlife but it’s disappeared off Spotify. I might take executive control and add them anyway. No playlist couldn’t be improved by the addition of those two.
Definitely. Love Is Just The Great Pretender (the original version) is a fabulous tune. I loved the eclectic early 80s.

long live rock and Roll by Rainbow a clear omission
I’m happy to confirm that it wasn’t an admin error. The non-selection of Long Live Rock & Roll was a result of a robust screening process featuring songs I have heard of and like. That one didn’t clear the first hurdle I’m afraid.
Incredibly, nothing by Status Quo came anywhere near being selected. I’m just as shocked as you are.
‘Nothing’ by Status Quo was a late 70s cover version of the John Cage classic 4 minutes 33 seconds. Lasting 43 seconds, because that’s how long the boys could hold it together before bursting out giggling, it features at the start a massive feedback whine as Alan Lancaster pulls out the bass guitar cable from his amp, still switched on, the squeak of a stool as John Coghlan eases away from his drum kit, unfortunately knocking a high hat onto the session room floor, and a few grunts, burps and occasional flatulence from Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi as they try to hold it together, sheepishly avoiding eye contact with each other. It finally collapses into the sound of fisticuffs when Parfitt picks up a Sharpie and draws a cock and balls on the back of Lancaster’s freshly laundered denim jacket.
Unsurprisingly it made the Top 10 as a B side to What You’re Proposin’, but ultimately led to Coghlan leaving the band, as he wasn’t allowed to mime a drum solo halfway through.
That’s a great story. They weren’t called “The Frantic Four!” for nothing. I’m surprised they lasted 43 seconds.

Thanks KFD! I don’t think there’s many deep cuts there – but I think you might like #21, “Jabdah” by Koto. It’s a wonderfully cheesy and joyful slab of 80s Italo-disco, which has a puzzling lyric half-way through about Jabba the Hutt. I notice the song’s official title changes the name slightly, probably to confound m’learned friends protecting the IP of George Lucas and his pals.
