I had a big birthday the other week, and my colleagues very kindly got me some Fopp vouchers. I haven’t bought much new this year, so this my chance to catch up. Are there any recent releases I should be checking out? For context, my last couple of purchases were The National, LCD Soundsystem, Mogwai and Feist.

David Rawlings – Poor David´s Almanack is a corker if you like that sort of stuff. “Stuff” in this case would mean Gillian Welch, David Rawlings or Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Possibly features a Neil Young cover not written by Neil Young.

Ignore all that new crap. My FOPP has all the Can remasters for either £7 or £5 a pop. Do yourself a favour.

Also there is a stupendous release on ACE – Sounds of the unexpected.
Weird instrumentals from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Will get repeat plays from me – bloody marvellous.
Sounds of the Unexpected will cause women to dance around in silhouette throwing playing cards all over the place.
Another vote for Sounds of the Unexpected. Even I shook my booty for 5-10 seconds during this.
Apparently there is a new Melanie de Biaseo, according to Homo, but I’m waiting for Tiggers review.
I’m still flying the flag for the Avalanches album Wildflower from last year. I’ll stick that in the ring as my suggestion!
