…and a Merry Christmas to you Jack and everyone who run this great place for Old Gizzards, @SteveT who whatever he posts about the pandemic is completely the opposite to FACT. and all those reading this and those who can’t be arsed.
Let’s hope 2021 is an improvement for everyone.
Stay Cool, Keep Warm as a good friend once said, Richie.
And a happy Christmas to all from me the reporter of non-fact apparently. Yes the Covid is bad but current deaths per million of Worldwide population is less than 0.025 percent. Yes we have to adhere to the restrictions but there really shouldn’t be any need for panic.
It will all end one day and then we can look forward to partying like its 1999 all over again.
and @Baron-Harkonnen I will post some cool pop music for you later. Might include some rapping for your delectation.
And for the record that Waitresses song is my second favourite Christmas record.
Merry Christmas Jack and also to everyone else on here from half way across the world….
Whilst Christmas Wrapping is up there as one of my favourites, I can’t resist using this post as an excuse to post this, one of this years favourite “Winter/ Christmas” songs……
There was a programme about this song on Radio 4 a couple of days ago. It was collected as a 2 line fragment by John Jacob Niles in 1933 in Carolina. They didn’t play this version. I think the programme is called Song Talk. Probably still available.
I much prefer my Xmas tunes to be more yer sleighbells n’ snow than the King’s College Cambridge Choir type efforts. Still way too much Christianity in Christmas for my liking (but perhaps that’s because I should really be doing Hanukkah instead…)
Everyone likes the Waitresses song, it’s great, but this one is the absolute finest Xmas song in recorded history, ever, bar none, end of argument.
I’m with you on this one Slug old chap….Always loved her appearance on David Letterman on his last show before Christmas singing this. Essence of Yule !
Hearing Christmas Wrapping is always a sign that the season of goodwill is about to commence.
Merry Christmas all, being able to visit this place all year and make a few contributions is a lot of fun.
Noddy has spoken, The Waitresses put in their annual appearance, and Father Ted got lost in the lingerie department. Yup, that time has arrived and I can no longer avoid it.
Take it away Frank …
Having survived all the way to December 21st without hearing that song, I’m determined to cross the Xmas day finishing line Un-Whammed.
There is absolutely no way I’m going to play even a “comedy” version.
Don’t worry @Mike_H this is the 35 minute version. You can listen to it without hearing it. It could be an outtake from a Jon Hopkins session. An icy log of yuletide ambience.
Well I was going to post the obligatory Here Comes Santa which, as any fule kno, is the GOAT of Christmas songs and videos. But instead here’s a nice new recording of River by Margo Price.
Very fond of The Waitresses, and The Pogues. And I found today in Tesco I have even developed warmth for The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. And of course Wham! had precisely one good song and it is last Christmas.
But my favourites are these two – one, nothing more old school (Wizzard). One, a bit different (Jonathan Coulton)
Silly, I know, but the very end of the Wizzard song where Roy sings “Why don’t you give your love for Christmas?” never fails to make me a bit teary. Bizarre.
Great tune. My favourite Christmas tune. Am I correct in saying that particular guitar teacher in Bournemouth taught GL. Robert Fripp, Andy Summers and Al Stewart?
Now, admittedly, I don’t listen to music radio (exception below) but, given the preponderance of about 40, the same 40, Christmas songs on rotation (apparently) from November 10th to December 25th, I find it incredible that in the 25 years since its release, I’ve heard “Christmastime is Here Again” once in public, anywhere … not even in a charidee shop.
It was on the Gary Crowley Show on a Saturday, when I had forgotten to turn over after the London football results. Must have been in about 2013.
I always think of The Beatles as, not “at,” Christmas – alongside Phil Spector, James Brown, The Beach Boys and Elvis – four no. 1 singles and they’re all fantastic.
Oh, and Mark Lamarr’s Christmas Day Show, the only DJ I ever did listen to, on Radio London and then Radio 2 (remember when that wasn’t complete shite?), that seemed to be around from the mid-1990s to about 2009. He used to play some brilliant Christmas songs.
I’ll spare you all a post of what is undoubtedly the best Christmas song of all time, knocking your Pogues, your Wizzards and your Waitresses into a cocked hat, namely Elton John’s Step Into Christmas, and I will post this one, which was on a Word cover CD a number of years ago, Davitt Sigerson’s It’s A Big Country … a cracking tune
This, as always, is the correct answer. I really don’t understand why it’s not better known. After all it originally appeared alongside the Waitresses song and Christmas Wrapping’s chart performance didn’t exactly set out to put others in the shade!
However, an honourable mention, especially this year should go to one of the Fountains of Wayne christmas songs…. how about this one..
Terry de Castro and Such Small Hands (Melanie Howard) – the ghosts of Wedding present bass past and present – are giving away on bandcamp this tune which I rather enjoyed.
(though not to Wizzard levels)
Christmas Wrapping is definitely there in my seasonal top ten.
My number one is this
(Charles Brown – Merry Christmas Baby)
.
A recent discovery from my favourite UK female singer is this take on “In The Bleak Midwinter” from a 2017 Xmas EP that slipped past my radar. One of my favourite seasonal songs too. Words by Christina Rosetti, tune by Gustav Holst.
.
Season’s greetings to all, near far and out in the wide blue yonder.
Let’s hope 2021 eventually turns into better times.
I was just about to correct you there and say that’s not Holst’s tune, that his is the OTHER setting of In The Bleak Midwinter. But then I checked and right enough, that’s the Holst one. How strange. For years I was under a misapprehension and didn’t realise he wrote that.
I’m with you on this one Slug old chap….Always loved her appearance on David Letterman on his last show before Christmas singing this. Essence of Yule !
Re: Christmas Wrapping. It was on the radio in the car as I came back from some shopping yesterday morning. “Great!” I thought and sang along. It’s a truly great song.
The last verse caught me on the hop and I admit that when the line “I’m spending this one alone,” he said. “Need a break; this year’s been crazy” came on, I cried a little for this year.
Hope next year is a better one for all. Happy Christmas eveyone.

My second favourite as well, after that Irish one with the swearing and homophobia that everyone gets so upset about.
That’s my ranking too.
Hey @SteveT you doddering owd git my comment was made in hilarity.
Anyhow your figures are out by almost 50%, as usual.
And while it`s Chrimbo here`s some Cool Musak fer yer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROIOeSHLUmc
Have a Cul Jul, Les, and as the good Baron suggests, likewise to all the those crooks and nannies who here post.
Here’s to a virus redacted 2021.
It’s my fave as well, Jack. Merry Christmas to you, too.

It’s Soul Music. Always good, this series is especially great.

Merry Christmas to you Jack, and to those who inhabit Afterword acres – residents and occasional grazers all.
This morning, a lovely story in the Washington Post alerted me to this slab of festive whambience..
Story here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/wham-last-christmas-slow-version/2020/12/16/6cb51496-3bd8-11eb-bc68-96af0daae728_story.html

Happy Christmas everyone
My predecessor used to post it I believe. Dear Mr. Fezziweg. I will post it in his honour.
Very fond of The Waitresses, and The Pogues. And I found today in Tesco I have even developed warmth for The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. And of course Wham! had precisely one good song and it is last Christmas.

In the words of Margo I say Yuletide felicitations to you all.
Here’s my favourite from the last several years (stay with it, it’s worth it)
As ever the best of anything is Prog related…
That’s one that really does remind me of being a kid at Christmas. I’m in no way a Prog fan but this is great.
As ever the worst of everything is prog related, but this is the exception and I like it a lot.
Great tune. My favourite Christmas tune. Am I correct in saying that particular guitar teacher in Bournemouth taught GL. Robert Fripp, Andy Summers and Al Stewart?
Just to annoy all the Beatles-deniers on here 🙂 – this is Christmas Time Is Here Again by the fabs.
I was just going to post that Arthur, good `un.
Not a Beatle-denier. Just Beatled-out and taking a year off.
Not annoyed because I won’t be clicking the link.

I listen to Gary Crowley most Saturday afternoons. He started Saturday’s show with Christmastime Is Here Again. It’s a tradition of his.
What? Every week!
No, sorry just the week before Christmas…
Not much better than this:
Merry Christmas Jack. Merry Christmas one and all….
Happy Christmas one and all. Shine Your Light – forever and a day… Bert Jansch’s ‘last song’, premiered by Sarah McQuaid two weeks ago.

I only heard this for the first time a couple of years ago, but it’s become my favourite crimble song
“Faith, hope and gluttony”
Just found this from the wonderful Thea Gilmore. Merry Christmas again!
Terry de Castro and Such Small Hands (Melanie Howard) – the ghosts of Wedding present bass past and present – are giving away on bandcamp this tune which I rather enjoyed.
(though not to Wizzard levels)

No love for Low?
Been meaning to listen to this for years @black-type and glad I finally have. It’s my new favourite Christmas song.!
@freddysteady The whole album is sublime…highly recommended.
Ah ta. Not a Christmas album I hope😬?
It’s a mini-album (or big EP) and very good indeed.
I adore this:
Christmas Wrapping is definitely there in my seasonal top ten.

Merry Christmas – and in the words of Alan ‘Dickie’ Bird, “God bless us, every wan”!
…and here’s a bit of Ella…
A fine sentiment for any time of year.
Nothing says Christmas more than Kim Wilde and Lawnmower Deth….
Happy Christmas from me and Sting and Annie Lennox getting mashed.
Enjoy.

Its unsurprising as The Waitresses first album is a truly great album.
