From Germany, it’s time to wish you a happy second Advent Sunday! And what better way to celebrate than with a wee tune from Dead Can Dance:
Sing along with Brendan:
“Lay bare your heart.
Induce the will of love
To restore what little faith
That you may have lost.
As morning brings rebirth,
A new day will dawn
To ease our troubled minds.
Turn away on your side
And dream of days to come”
You would have to ask The Light. She actually enjoys Christmas and I’d happily give the whole thing a miss, which I think is a lot of blokes default position. Wake me up on Hogmanay, which I’ve always preferred because it’s over in one night and no one is too bothered if you don’t even want to pay any attention to that.
Well Christmas should only be about 3 days or so (technically it’s 1 day). My last day of work is 20th so I will endeavour to get in the spirit of the season then. Doesn’t need to be a month long
I might enjoy it more if I hadn’t spent so many Christmases working in retail (bookselling) where planning for Christmas starts in August. Even after 20 years in an office job, I dwelt in the belly of the beast too long.
Not forgetting thumbs up and the cry of “Book Early” and staying on him as his hands started to descend slowly until brought back into place with a snap.
Having retired in April I can honestly say I will not miss the endless Christmas songs played in the office where I used to work. They would start the first week of December – absolutely dreadful.
The Holiday has been watched, and Hans Gruber has fallen from Nakatomi Towers. So it is officially Christmas season at our house. Tree is up. Twinkly lights up. Cards sent. Presents wrapped.
Shame there are 2 weeks of work to go.
STILL – gives me time to finish my 20 albums of the year (hadn’t realised Warrington Runcorn New Town had a new album out – must listen).
Speaking of Christmas songs – the best rendition of ANY seasonal song must surely be that old Berlin tradition of the Football Hooligan singalong: what started as an in-joke from a few fans is now a big event.
Berlin’s (nowadays) biggest football club, Union Berlin, traditionally invites fans to their stadium on the night before boxing day to »sing« Christmas songs, from »Silent Night« to »Last Christmas«. Marvellous.
Uncle Wheaty says
Here is the best ever Christmas song to kick off the festivities.
Boneshaker says
An excellent choice. It’s always been my favourite too.

Don’t mention it to Retro – I mentioned it once (etc, etc…)

I love it too but I think my favourite is Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses.
Leedsboy says
Not only the best ever Christmas song but arguably the best bass riff ever.
Black Celebration says
I approve of this choice too. Always loved it.
I wish you a *brave* new year.

I don’t keep Christmas anymore but to those on here that do so…

Still in retail (selling records) but currently on a secondment at HO. Felt very strange to be putting in a holiday request for Christmas week.

The Home Office? Choosing playlists for Starmer and Co? Might explain a bit.

A month if only.
