20 years ago today the best TV series ever* aired for the first time. I rewatched it for the 5th time just before Christmas – still utterly brilliant and every time you rewatch an episode you see things you missed before. And what a perfect opening song/set of scenes!

I recently finished watching it fro front to back for the 3rd time. No doubt I will start watching it again later this year.
I know its a cliche, but I really do think it is the best TV programme I have ever seen.

20 years!!! I was expecting it to say 10 years when I opened the thread. Where does the time go, etc? I’ve got a few series lined up, but I think I will dust the box set off after those. I don’t think my wife watched the first few series, so I’m sure she’ll enjoy starting from the beginning.
Magical tv. Drowning yourself in that world was the highlight of the week, when it first went out.

I thnk it really IS the best TV drama ever made ( I wavered briefly at one stage having fallen in love with The Wire), but as I’ve aged, it has improved & has revealed new depths in the way that only truly great art can.
Unlike almost any other TV I can think of, it really is better than it seemed when I first saw it. ALWAYS worth a rewatch.
I haven’t watched it. My idiosyncratic list is as follows.
1. The Bridge
2. Breaking Bad
3. Mad Men
4. Our Friends in the North
5. When the Boat Comes In
Only Mad Men gets anywhere near the Sopranos for me. The rest are fine but essentially linear. BB became predictable after a while, where you’re waiting for Walter to do science to get out of this week’s hole. Again, good stuff but no depth by comparison.
iTunes currently have the complete collection going for £40 – that’s all 86 episodes in full 1080 high definition.
Or the same price on amazon for real discs rather than being tied into using Apple devices (I presume)

Never really saw much of it at the time for some reason, although I watched a few of the initial episodes and thought it was interesting, and with hindsight if I’d stuck with it I may have become hooked. I suspect it was because mine was more of a Breaking Bad and Man Men household. A couple of years ago I was given the complete box set, (or at least I think it is the complete one) so maybe I should get on with watching that.
It’s good. But it’s not Our Friends in the North good.
I have 6 episodes of the last series to watch.

There’s a slight chance I am wrong but didn’t it go a bit “Dallas” (it was all a dream etc) during the coma season? Happy to be corrected, it’s been a decade since I watched it.
Yeah – season 5, episode 11, “The Test Dream” – a poor episode indeed.
Not in the way Dallas did, but there’s a weird extended dream sequence which some didn’t like. It all means something though!
I have absolutely no idea why I have never watched this as it’s EXACTLY the sort of thing I would usually devour.
It’s being shown again (two episodes at a time) on Sky Atlantic (started this week) so I’m in. Totally taken with the first two episodes as I expected
