New episode of Albumtoalbum is out now and its the first instalment of a chat with bass-wallah Guy Pratt whose stock of HORAs is on a par with Ellen, Hepworth at the very least. We don’t get very far in our discussion of Lodger, but I did have a lot of fun with him. Have a listen! 🙂
Looking forward to this.
Did you see the mention in the podcast article in this month’s Q?
Ooh, no I haven’t! What did it say?
“Feed your head. Dorian Lynskey investigates the most rewarding music podcasts to while away the hours with.
“Dissect (Spotify, 2016-)
The pitch: Dissect selects a single iconic album per season, and unpacks the lyrics,
music and meaning of one song per episode.
The story: Music college graduate Cole Cuchna was working for a coffee company
when he started Dissect in his Sacramento garage to share his obsession with Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly.
Subsequent series have unpacked albums by Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Lauryn Hill
and Tyler, the Creator. “We’re speaking about recent history in a way that’s typically reserved for history books,” says Cuchna.
He hooked up with Spotify in 2018, but his distinctive tone – smart, passionate, idealistic – hasn’t changed. “Hopefully you come out of a season knowing a little more about the world we live in, and a little more about yourself as well.”
Start here: Kanye’s Power explained via Beethoven and Greek mythology.
Try this: AlbumtoAlbum. Journalist Arsalan Mohammad’s fantastic voyage through David Bowie’s back catalogue.”
Page 41 of the June issue. I’ll put it on your FB page.
Fantastic – are you Arsalan Mohammad? I’ve loved this series. Stuart Maconie really does give excellent value for money on the Diamond Dogs episodes.
Thanks – yep I am Arsalan 🙂 Stuart was fantastic, wasn’t he. I hope to have him back on at some point.
Enjoyed this -Johnny Marr – the african highlife sound. Interesting.
All the best actors are short with big heads ? Where’s my Oscar?
BTW is this the photo with Bowie he talks about ?

Thats the one! I stupidly tweeted it was taken in Milton Keynes despite the fact that Guy had told me twice it was taken in Germany
These podcasts are great, not least for your own well informed contributions. Lodger is an underrated album. A favourite of mine, even if you don”t say much about it. It has a playful feel, morecenjoyable to listen than some of the more sacred works.
Thanks! I really am fond of Lodger. I know what you mean by playful it has a vast palette of sounds, moods and ideas.
It seems to divide Bowie fans, I know a fair few who hate it. I can imagine if you loved the way things were going in Low and Heroes, this might have seemed a backwards move, with ‘proper’ song structures, especially side 2’s mix of fairly straightforward rock sounds.
I like it a lot, especially as Boys Keep Swinging was the first Bowie hit single I was really aware of at the time it came out (apart from Starman of course), and I bought it in Woolworths, probably the week it went down to no. 45 or something to get it at half price.
I enjoyed the Nicholas Pegg Lodger episode very much by the way. Lots of interesting detail.
I remember when DJ came out as a single. The feeling was that it was rather insubstantial. More daring and experimental work was hoped for. It seemed that way for me too. Now I love it. Tongue in cheek with the Talking Heads parody yet heartfelt too. With the perspective we have now we can see Bowie was still operating at a high, inspired level on this album, now we know how he faltered in the eighties and beyond.
The Nicholas Pegg episodes are great, only problem for me is I have some difficulty distinguishing the voices of Pegg and @slotbadger Maybe it’s just me, being a working class guy from the valleys?
Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I didn’t know it was David Gilmour playing bass on Hey You. That intro is one of my favourite Floyd moments.
Another hit! Loved it. And there’s going to be a part 2? Deep joy.
I’ll look forward to that, thanks SB. Coincidentally I should have been watching Pratt tonight, with Nick Mason in Guildford. This will make a good substitute
Thank you!
Half way through the episode. I’m not that bothered about Bowie but I do like Guy Pratt and he delivers here. I once bought Lodger for a mate and had to sit through it but I hated it and have never listened since. I prefer earlier DB.
Sorry should have been clearer – it’s a great listen!
