I was just reminded about Thee Hypnotics, a band I used to see live in the nineties with a great Stooges/MC5 image and sound. After they split, the Jim Jones Revue (apparently) continued the dirty, noisy rock’n’roll sound (clip featured). It puts me in mind of a kind of genre or feel of music – sort of Cramps, Gallon Drunk, Gun Club, Lounge Lizards, Morphine, Barry Adamson, Eat – grimey, loose, swampy sound.
Anyone else inspired to get down and dirty with some mucky music?

From the industrial oil end of grebo? – I like the meaty pounding bass.

How about some Primevals?
salwarpe says
Absolutely! Although I prefer the fuller sound in this clip – captures the wailing guitar, if not the live experience

the bloke who recorded the Rouen gig is a pal, and he was 3 feet away from me!

and the chap who was dancing down the front in the Rouen gig gave me a hug afterwards. He smelt like drains. In a bad way.

Something of the high pitched urgency of Rob Tyner in the vocals maybe?

The Jim Jones Revue were terrific, one of the best live acts around. JJ has a new band now – Jim Jones And The Righteous Mind. I saw them back in October (with Bad Seed Jim Sclavunos sitting in on drums) and they’re really good as well. Only one EP out so far – this is the lead track
salwarpe says
Love this, and glad he’s still out there, making raucous music and bringing such bold and striking imagery to life.

Grimey rock never goes out of style. I remember playing this at a party many moons agoand the dancefloor went bonkers.
Gun Club – Run though the jungle
Which makes me think of Creedence who could as grimey as the best of them.
salwarpe says
Let’s have a bit more Gun Club – from Mother Juno – the only album I know, but beautifully mucky. Here, he seems to be channelling Bill Hicks
el hombre malo says
all the Gun Club albums up to Mother Juno are AMAZEBALLS – check out The Las Vegas Story RIGHT NOW!! (The Primevals supported the Gun Club in Nov 83, when they were touring TLVS. And astonishing)

Cheers, ehm – I just heard some of the album on YouTube – it’s good stuff on first listen.

This grimey enough for ya?
salwarpe says
Very much so – highly sleazy. I particularly like what sound like farting trumpets.
Declan says
Featuring the reappearance of the My Sharona octave bass riff. Still good. Hope I haven’t ruined it for you, Contrary, as in the music from The Sweeney sounding like A Love Supreme, here once, to howls of anguish.

Gawd. I love this band. They were stupendous live. Raaarrrrr.

Carla does grimy/sleazy vey well in all her guises.
This is probably her at her most sleazy, though not so rock’n’roll.

The Stranglers make great grimy music – nice’n’sleazy:
Listening to the lead bass and synths, I’m pondering about the New Order /Stranglers connection and found a relevant quote from Peter Hook on the JJB influence:
“I went to Bingley Hall in Stafford to see The Stranglers and I remember being absolutely transfixed by Jean-Jaques Burnel,” Hook remembers. “I thought he was the coolest thing I’d ever seen and his sound was unbelievable. It just blew me away. I remember waiting until the end of the gig to get near the front to go and write down what his set-up was. And it was a Vox TB18 cab with a HiWatt 100 and then I set my stall out to sound exactly like Jean-Jaques, so I went out and bought both.”
Well, it interested me.
Junior Wells says
Lee Brilleaux’s (originally) White suit alone should qualify the Feelgoods.
