Can’t find the previous OP about ‘greatest ever’ , but heard this this morning on Kershaw’s latest podcast episode & today at least, this is the most beautiful song I’ve heard.

Musings on the byways of popular culture

I’ve only ever been to church reluctantly for weddings and funerals but the Devil doesn’t have all the best tunes. See also the Summer Of Soul performance.

1. I’ve really enjoyed the gospel tracks that Andy Kershaw has played on his podcasts. I intend to get a Swan Silvertones compilation, but … it’s difficult to know which one to choose.
2. While we’re in a gospelly mood, how about this all-time classic from the Soul Stirrers featuring Sam Cooke:

Episode 10 of AK’s podcast is the first which hasn’t cost me 50 quid in new (to me) CDs. I (slightly) fear to listen to Ep 11.
duco01 says
Have you listened to Episode 11 of Andy Kershaw’s podcast yet, fentonsteve?
Around the I hr 30 mins mark, things get pretty … emotional. Kershaw is clearly in pretty desperate financial straits…

Yes, I listened on Sunday while I cleaned grease off the cooker hood (one of those horrid occasional jobs) and was struck by the frog in his throat.
He’s had to sell his beloved motorbike. Here’s hoping he gets enough to buy it back. I haven’t bought any CDs again this time, but have sent the funds in his direction instead.

That’s the blighter!
Cheers for that. Yesterday I thought it was ‘Roadrunner (twice)’ by Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers, but today it’s definitely The Stars of Bethlehem (see above).

The greatest song ever is either River Deep Mountain High, or A Day in the Life.
Alexa flip a coin.
Okay, it’s River Deep Mountain High.
Mike_H says
As far as I’m concerned, the best God-bothering song ever in recorded history is this one by The Swan Silvertones.
.
For the folk-rock genre, I’d put this one by Fotheringay just slightly ahead of Fairport’s “A Sailor’s Life”

Love this thread. Here’s the topper though. https://youtu.be/ovMdp0UesGM

That’s beautiful & new to me (which is the real thrill as far as I’m concerned).
In the spirit of ‘radio ping pong’ I think that deserves an airing for this blistering classic.

“I’ve got something. That’s better than LSD.” Yes, it’s the Jesus Pill, obv.

Today, and most days tbh, it’s this.

Fabulous song. Touching, expansive, ambitious and a great sentiment. Right up there with XTC’s best.

Today the best song ever is certainly by Edwin Starr.
I wonder if Wonderful Radio Kremlin do requests….

My favourite, most glorious spiritual song…

At the risk of repeating myself and others…
Family, Streetwalkers, Linda Lewis – it’s always a great song…
