These days, I’m rather bored by the over-exposed big prog bands of yore, and any mysique they have fades with every additional exposure. By contrast, those style combinations, chords and instruments in different configuration can still thrill me. This is a lovely example of a new discovery, and, being from the USA in 1971, a veritable unicorn.
It won’t be for everyone, man. If your attitude is bald, and you smirked at those kids in school with centre partings, cheesecloth shirts, flared jeans, and chucka boots or tennis shoes, go back to your Showaddywaddy, OK? I’ll be in the art room at lunchtime, avoiding rough boys, and trying to impress Jaqui by telling her how complex the playing on ths album is. She has violin lessons, so she’ll understand.
Other recommendations of unfamiliar quality prog?

Rather tiring listening.
About three minutes in and we already have about half a dozen different tune snippets cobbled together. A bit of a mess, if you ask me (you didn’t). They can certainly play.
It’s a 37 minute clip. I just can’t face any more. Sorry.
Hang on @mike_h
Isn’t that Prog?
Precisely. Water’s wet.
It’s a strand of Prog, for sure. One I stopped favouring in the early-to-mid ’70s when melody was replaced by showoff virtuosity. “Progressive” music stopped progressing, so they abbreviated it’s name.
What happened to Ressive? Even Record Collector doesn’t have a section for that.
That’s where Showaddywaddy comes in.
Bollocks…by the ‘80s, maybe – but not by ‘72!
@Mike_H
Six different tune snippets in three minutes?
There’s the single right there!
Can’t have a 3-minute Prog single. Have to loop it. Maybe repeat it backwards too.
Here you go:
Not forgetting:
What are the two vids, VV? I can’t see ‘em…
No idea what the problem is – I can see ’em and play ’em fine.
Good for you! No help, though – since you didn’t mention what they were.
Forse preferisci sentire questo?
Can’t see that one either…
Or try some Peruvian….
@fitterstoke These are the tracks I posted:
Cressida – Let Them come When They Will – from the 1971 LP ‘Asylum’.
Affinity – Three Sisters – from their eponymous 1970 LP.
Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso – La Conquista Della Posizione Eretta – from the 1972 LP ‘Darwin!’.
Traffic Sound – the title track from the 1970 LP ‘Tibet’s Suzettes’.
Thanks, VV – plenty to investigate!
Back to the OP – I rather enjoyed that, @Vincent – shades of The Nice when they had Davy O’List on board. Maybe that’s a lazy comparison, given the Hammond/bass sound. Bit of ELP with the Hammond/Moog mix…anyway, very good.
Don’t know if this will do it for you – bit of 90s Norwegian progressive…
Or even more recent…
Then there’s this:
That’ll show THE STRAIGHTS.
Lots to explore there, thanks!
“The geese and the ghost” by Anthony Phillips got big praise on the Album Years podcast. I don’t know it but AP has some very nice compilations I liked a lot so I will be investigating.
