Obituary
One of my favourite ever cricketers. What a player through a pretty dreadful time for England. Slightly horrified, for all sorts of reasons, that at 55 he was only three years older than me. RIP Thorpey.

I’m really shocked and sad to hear that.
Apparently a very good footballer who had trials with Arsenal.
Terrible news.

Only 55. Very, very sad

Very sad. An excellent player
Clive says
Sad indeed scored a lovely 118 at Lahore in the first test I saw abroad

Lefties seem to exude an extra level of elegance. Think also of Gower
Smudger says
You obviously never saw me bat.
Sad news. As others have said, he was a rare ray of light during a pretty depressing time for English cricket. There’s been some touching tributes from fellow pros of his era: Athers, Cork and Butcher amongst them. Worth a look on YouTube.

Great batsman in a poor England era. He’d slot in perfectly now
dai says
He took his own life. What a terrible shame 🙁
Guiri says
Tragically it seems that he jumped in front of a train. Very brave of his family to want to use the tragedy to highlight depression and suicide.

Compare and contrast. Per my thread, I can detach myself from the person under my train. My fellow ASLEF member – I don’t know them, but I will certainly know their rep – will be trying to cope with their ordeal while part of their story is splashed over the papers. That’s going to be harder to deal with.

I did think of you when I read this, thanks for your response.

It was terribly sad before today’s news. Now, it feels desperate. Poor man and poor family.
Native says
Terrible news and incredibly brave on his family to speak so openly about what has happened.
Freddy Steady says
Yes I thought that too @native
Would have been easy not to say anything at all.
