Obituary
Leeds, Manchester United and Scotland defender.
Was briefly the most expensive transfer between British clubs – February 1978, Leeds to Manchester United for £500,000.
Scored in the 86th minute of the 1979 FA Cup Final, setting up “the 5 minute final”
(a particularly dull game but for those last 5 minutes)
Also St. Mirren. A very good footballer. Sad day.
The great John Hollins died yesterday as well – terrific player – something like 750 gmes (still the outfield record) for Chelsea, QPR and Arsenal – who amazingly only won one England cap
Remember him this way
Never really forgiven by Leeds fans for following Joe Jordan across The Pennines; would he have gone had Jordan not left was the question that hung in the air.
Proof if it was needed that the Revie team was finished and the balance of power was swinging back to Manchester.
Fine Central Defender though who slotted seamlessly into the Leeds defence after Jack Charlton’s retirement.
My Panini sticker books are becoming sadder by the day.
A big part of my childhood. He played for MY club, St Mirren then wasca success in England, scoring THAT goal which made the 9 year old me, clad in tartan from head to toe & overdosed on Tunnocks’ finest, scream with joy.
I’m running out of heroes…
I watched the 5 minute final at a friend’s house in London and then got the train back to Norwich. I sat next to a couple of Man U fans who had been at the game. One told me that he had betted on Arsenal to win the cup at the start of the season. When United equalised, convinced they were on their way to victory, he took the betting slip out of his wallet and ripped it up!
Sad news, I liked him as a player.
