What does it sound like?:
Every now and then I stumble upon something totally new that grabs me by the proverbials and will not let go…. this currently being the new album “Man Made Object” by GoGo Penguin.
Maybe not a band name you would associate it with, but GoGo Penguin are a piano led Jazz trio and this apparently is their third album. Whilst it is listed as Jazz, there are elements from many genres – the pulsating rhythms suggest Electronic, the opening piano reminiscent of Chopin…..
I’m still not sure how to describe it all, other than its been on repeat these past couple of days and I’m loving it.
What does it all *mean*?
I don’t really know to be honest – its just great music. Take a look at the YouTube clip in the comments to give you a better idea.
Goes well with…
Late nights, lights down and and a nice bottle of good red (or white if you prefer).

I was reading about them earlier today but hadn’t heard them until now.
Musically very impressive indeed.
Disliked the visuals in that clip intensely but that’s not at all relevant here.
Another clip, live, where you can see what they look like. Dunno what album the track is from.
Looks like I’ll need to go see them as a matter of urgency and meanwhile explore their albums further.

That track is also on this new album…..

I’ve been digging this album a lot since it came out. Really good, transporting accessible jazz. If you are planning to catch them live @Mike_H, don’t hang about. I was too slow off the mark to get tickets for their Bristol gig, which sold out months in advance.

I loved v2.0 from 2014. Manchester has a thriving jazz scene. They perform tonight and tomorrow at The Band N The Wall. Birmingham after that.
Since Bowie died, I’ve only bought a download of Massive Attack’s EP. I think this will be my first ‘proper’ purchase since the 8th of Jan. Thanks, F.

Cheers for the review, Chrisf. I’m definitely going to get this, because I liked Fanfares and I luuurrved 2.0. The band were originally in the Gondwana stable, of course, which has brought us so much wonderful music from Manchester over the past decade. I reckon quite a few people who aren’t hardcare jazz fans would probably go for GoGoP. It’s immensely enjoyable stuff.
The thing is, I don’t know whether to by the single CD or the double vinyl LP. I shall have to weigh up my decision.

the packaging’s not that exciting, so I went for the boring but utilitarian CD

I listened to this a couple of days ago and thought it a significant advance from 2.0 which I also liked. Hoping it is on my emusic sub, as 2.0 was.
Who it reminds me of are the similarly accessible modern jazzers EST, if you like this I would check them out too.

Heard them on The Freak Zone on Sunday night and Tindeled it yesterday. superb, so the Tax Dodgers got an order.

Another top AW recommendation, loving this. Will go and investigate the other albums in due course.

Another endorsement of this album from me. It’s pretty darned good and better than 2.0, which was no slouch itself.

I’m listening to them right now with my old man – at last we’ve found something we both like! Not sure I’d have heard of them were it not for this thread – so big thanks ?
