Paul will be visiting Glossop Record Club to talk about Macca, Deaf School, Bowie (and because I’m asking the questions, Morrissey) and his life in music journalism. We’ll also be playing a few records relating to his books along the way. If you can come, please be ready with your own questions as my interview technique borders on ‘shambolic’ at the best of times.
It’s free, the drinks are cheap and you’ll get a warm welcome. What more could a young heart desire?

Bloody ‘ellfire! Sounds like a great evening WH. If you can ask him if he thinks that Bowie is actually a greater and more enduring influence than The Beatles, I’d be grateful. (Because I do)
Wishing you a lovely time.
Great question Fin! Many thanks – I’ll let you know his response in a few weeks ?
@Fin59 – @WholeHogg asked Paul Du Noyer your question!

Thank you Simon for taking the time to post this and Mr Hogg for hosting the evening asking the question – and to PDN for answering in such a thorough and considered fashion.
I think broadly his point that The Beatles created the pop world that Bowie later bestrode and that their influence simply had greater scale is true but I liked WH’s follow up point about Bowie’s influence perhaps being more “future proofed”.
My take is that The Beatles undoubtedly had a greater musical influence but that Bowie had a wider Art affect. In some ways he was more of a mixed media artist than he was a musician/singer. Hence his effect on a range of artists, fashion designers, film makers and advertising types (mea culpa) continues to resonate. His own last great work being the manner of his leaving.
Anyway, fascinating subject and expertly introduced and discussed. Thanks again!

There really needs to be a Market Harborough Record Club held at my local over the road. Maybe I need to extract a digit and sort one…
