New album with David Rawlings out today. Looks like a lockdown covers thing, but new Gillian Welch is new Gillian Welch, right?
TO OUR FRIENDS AND FANS,
For reasons better discussed in the history books, in the Spring of 2020 Gillian and I dusted off an old tape machine and did some home recording. Sometimes we bumped the microphone, sometimes the tape ran out, but in the end we captured performances of some songs we love. Five are first takes and five took a little more doing, but they all helped pass the time and held our interest in playback enough that we wanted to share them with you. We sincerely hope that you enjoy
ALL THE GOOD TIMES
– David & Gillian

This is indeed good news. The first song on the album is the only one I’ve heard of – Jackson. Am not too sold on their cover as it is so far out of the original tune it kind of misses the whole joy of it for me, but am keen to hear all the other songs, as they will all be “new” to me.

Came on here to post the same thing but you beat me to it! I’ve just noticed this on Spotify and hadn’t heard anything about it in advance – looks like they’ve just put it out there without fanfare. Can’t wait to listen – it’s been way too long since Gillian’s last record. 9 years since The Harrow and the Harvest.
In other good news, Margo Price has a new album out today as well.

I came here to post precisely this news!
Happy days.

Oh God. Furlough doesn’t cover CD purchasing, especially when you furlough yourself.

Thanks for the alert @Kid-Dynamite I will order this post haste. I saw them play Jackson on their last UK tour and they made a good job of it
@Blue-Boy the Margo Price is ace – quite a different sound.

Well I’ve listened to it all of once and first impressions are very good. Only issue for me is that they are a bit like Richard and Linda Thompson – the bloke should really stick to his superb guitar playing and leave the lead vocals to the glorious voice of his partner.

Rawlings singing the Dylan songs. Senor is a bit insipid but his version of the Dylan rarity, in Dylanesque voice, is pretty good.
Rawlings’ solo albums have been quite popular so his voice appeals to some people. I find it a nice break from Gillian’s somewhat unvarying style.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Think you’ll find some wise soul has placed Dave’s first “solo” album in the Top 10 Albums of the 21st Century poll. That wise soul is never Wrong (apart from sometimes)
Junior Wells says
I know that bloke, you’d never trust him. He slagged Goats Head Soup
Lodestone of Wrongness says
And he says Dave’s “Señor” is better than Bob’s. He knows a thing or two that fella…
Blue Boy says
Yes, I was maybe being a bit harsh, and it was actually Senor I had in mind. On first listen it was a bit disappointing and an odd choice – I agree Abandoned Love is much better
Lodestone of Wrongness says
See above..
Blue Boy says
I generally bow to your ineffable rightness on all things musical. On this one, however, I think you’ll find that you are – how can I put this? – wronger than a wrong thing that is entirely wrong.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
To my mind there was always something “manufactured” about Street Legal, like Bob was trying to pretend his mojo hadn’t really left quite yet. And Señor summed all that feeling up nicely. It took Dave to realise there is a mighty fine song hidden in there – bravo, Dave! You know I’m Right.
Junior Wells says
Willie Nelson does a fine version of Senor.
I refuse to succumb to your lunacy Lodes.
