Combs for teeth! That’s taking specialism a touch too far.
Great stuff. Podbeaned (is that a word?)
It is now!
Sounds right up my Strasse. I have downloaded the first one off of Spotify for my morning commute.
I enjoyed it very much. I bought Smash Hits from the first issue all the way to the late 80s. I loved its general silliness. My very sarcastic older brother was very scathing – he picked up a copy once, opened it and said “ooh! it says here that Nick Heyward hates wrinkled prunes on his grandad’s bollocks” .
Glad you liked it – episode 2 only days away! Thanks for listening
As an NME reader, I think I never bought a copy of Smash Hits. I used to pick it up in the newsagents and read it there though. Will check this out.
I bought Smash Hits, Record Mirror, NME, Melody Maker and sometimes Sounds too.
So far up my street it could have been done especially for me. Listening to podcast and playlist soon
Cheers Dave – another one dropping very soon so, if you enjoyed the 1st one, keep ’em peeled
Episode 2, focusing on an issue from 1989 is out now. Bros feature quite heavily – here’s a short taste -https://twitter.com/GiddyPopPod/status/1204129025838501891?s=09
Episode 4 went online this morning – it features Mr D Hepworth discussing a Smash Hits of his choice from 1982 – the one with Martin Fry on the cover, blowing a load of chiffon out of his sax hole (a not-as-easy-as-it-looks feat)
David describes what the Smash Hits office was like at the time, the various alter egos of a future PSB, a potted history of the ‘Zelig with leg warmers’ Toni Basil and much more besides. And this is only part 1!
Available wherever you get your podcasts and contactable on twitter (@GiddyPopPod), Instagram, Facebook etc etc.
Hope ya like it!
Some of you might be interested in the latest episode -it’s the 1st part of a doublehander with special guest Barry McIlheney. Barry used to work for Hot Press, then Melody Maker before becoming the editor of Smash Hits in the mid-80s.
In this episode he discusses the move from Melody Maker to Ver Hits, Bowie, Curiosity Killed The Cat and the inside story of Tom Hibbert’s famous interview with Maggie T. More to come next week!
