Friday 13th happens to be the day that Gaz Coombes new album “Turn the car around” comes out, and he has a warm up show in Kingston.
Listened to the new album earlier before the concert and enjoyed it. Not sure what he’s been through last few years but seems a bit more lyrically deep, lots of references to love and loss. Maybe a break up or death somewhere
Played mainly the new album, he’s as ever an excellent live performer. The band were good but lack a bit of fire, like his proper band. The newer material sounded much better than his earlier solo stuff.
Changed his guitar pretty much every song.
Played no Supergrass stuff despite a few optimistic shout outs for Sun hits the sky from the crowd.
I wonder if on a longer set he plays any of his older hits. I like the new album but I think a lot of his solo work sounds a bit samey over a whole set.
The audience:
Full of 40 something people myself included.
It made me think..
Gaz is same age as me in his mid 40’s but looks 20 years younger depressingly
We (me, Mrs L and two friends) were at this too! I liked Supergrass a lot but I’d not been a huge fan of him on his own. I’d only heard the new solo album once just a few hours earlier driving home from work, and it does seem much more melodic and immediate than his earlier solo stuff, none of which particularly grabbed me.
I see what you mean about his band in their appearance but I thought, musicianship-wise they were excellent. Lovely harmonies at times as well. Good performance all round.
I like gigs at Pryzm…nice and local for me, generally good sound and often an early finish to accomodate the “nightclub” which attracts the area’s youth.
I agree and my comment about the band reads a bit harshly this morning. They played perfectly well.
Pryzm is a fine venue, and the early finishes suit an old fogey like me.
From yesterday evening’s På Spåret quiz show.
Which Oxford band had a hit with this song?
Neither team knew.
I hope Team Spånga did better @DuCo01!!
He was interviewed in the i yesterday, which piqued my interest, so it’s good to get this corroboration. An audience full of fortysomethings? Haven’t been to anything so spry in years!
Well it wasn’t FULL of fortysomethings because I was there…at 55 I reckon I might well have been one of the oldest.
