170 Russell St, Melbourne
170 Russell St- how is that for a venue name? talk about functional/All that is missing is the area code. Smallish place with terraced viewing.Stinking hot until the A/C eventually kicked in.
I’ve heard all the buzz and watched a bit of youtube but not overly familiar with the catalogue of the guy who
( probably to his chagrin) is billed as the future of the blues or the new Hendrix. A four piece band and hazy lighting – no glaring spotlights on his Gretsch/Gibson SG/ Fender Strat. More groove type blues with a lot of fuzz -hence the Hendrix reference presumably.
Zero stage craft -just the occasional mumbled intro.
His voice was okaaay but nothing special. I thought the show really went up a notch when he went into Fourth Stone From The Sun. This was followed by a lovely “love song” clean blues notes on the Fender with surprisingly falsetto ala Prince surprisingly. I loved ti when he said I just feel like playing some more and stretched out the solo. Yep he can play alright. New Hendrix- no way.
Fair range old blues fans, younger set and more women than I was expecting.
It made me think..
If Gary Clark Jr is the future of the blues then it is probably a reflection of the paucity of genuine stars coming through. Having said that he is good – well worth seeing
