What does it sound like?:
“I don’t care Bargie Boy, publish the damn pictures – see if I care! Oh, you mean those pictures. Right then, Gang Of Four it is, always liked them, should be a breeze”.
Finds ancient iPod in desk, scrolls through. Yes, I knew it – I have two albums. Hmm, I recall they were very loud and that Andy Gill played guitar and, I think, wrote most of the songs? But of these two records I only remember Damaged Goods. Let’s listen, wow that hasn’t aged well, has it? A punk pastiche?
Right, scours the internet, “Critically adored”, “Kurt Cobain loved them” (reminds me, anyone seen HP Saucy recently?), “Ferocious but intelligent”. Hmm, If you had asked me at the time I would have said “Wanky posturing” and “Too intelligent for their own good” and finished off with “Give me Fulham Fallout any day”.
Time for action so let’s start with Track 1. Hold on, this is not how I remember Gang Of Four, sure the thumping bass and the jangly, jumpy guitar are still there but this is, you know, rather good! Sounds like very early Talking Heads. Colour me surprised.
Time for more research – ah, only Andy Gill left from original line-up. And what’s this – “Andy Gill is NOT the music critic Andy Gill”? How can I have been so Wrong all these years, who would have thunk it? Right then, onwards and upwards.
A week passes….
I’m sorry Bargie, I’m sorry Tiggs, but three plays of the LP is all I can manage. It really is a lot more Lodestone Friendly than I would ever have imagined and there’s something rather appealing about this poppy mix of David Byrne, Andy Partridge and the tosser from Franz Ferdinand but in the end there’s nothing remotely new and exciting going on here. No doubt fans will be pleased but right here, right now you lot should be listening to Billie Eilish or Laura Stevenson.
What does it all *mean*?
Old punks never die, they just fade away
Goes well with…
You know that time in between the afternoon biccie and “Is it too soon for a glass of wine”?
