Being from down here what was good about his show.? I never heard it.
He is a music nerd. He clearly loves music and his gentle style was peppered with professorial comments about the music and chart positions. His music choice was never edgy – his natural home was Radio 2 I would guess. Peel thought he was alright as well.
The main thing is he was an American on UK radio, he had a Saturday afternoon show on BBC Radio 1 where he went through latest US releases and charts. That would be late 70s/80s I guess. He also fronted a lot of music documentaries
As the boy from Leeds says, he loved music (unusual on radio 1 in those days), and had encyclopedic pop knowledge, often wheeled out on TV/radio to pay tribute to a recently departed musician
I’ve often wondered to myself: who will radio & TV call when Gambo goes to the big studio in the sky?

Hope not, we will be stuck in 1973 or whatever bloody year it was.
I don’t know his radio show but I’ve seen him down through the years as a talking head on various TV music shows and I enjoy his hosting of the music quiz Counterpoint on Radio 4 which I listen to as a podcast. I wish him well…
