I’ve long been an Abba-frowner. However, I often think the covers of their songs are excellent. I think it’s the bland Europop thing, often thinking Roxette are the band Abba could have been.
Pulp’s reunion has been very productive. Three tours including parts of the world that never saw them the first time, one superb album, two books, and this year two cover versions and a new song for War Child. They seem to be sticking with this massively expanded lineup, too.
My favourite ABBA song – first heard it when covered by Blancmange.
With added echoes of Scott Walker and The Days Of Pearly Spencer
That is a very good version of a very good song. The BBC Piano Room has a lot of very interesting stuff on it.
Seconded. Some very good stuff in their archive.
Including 10 minutes by Raye (real name Rachel Keen) from 2023.
Very good version. I’ve never really taken to Pulp but I like this a lot.
Absolutely superb
Wonderful.
There was a great version of this on a Word cd, by The Real Tuesday Weld.
I’m sure none of us has forgotten it, but just in case … This thread of exegesis is peak-Afterword.
A fantastic typically understated version from the Sheffield sociopolitical musical meisters.
Should go down a hit with the many ABBA-loving AWers.
A fine cover – they add their stamp without stuffing up the icy wonder of the original.
Going to see them on Saturday. They played this in Melbourne so fingers crossed.
What a superb arrangement by the BBC Concert Orchestra. And Pulp are in very fine form indeed. Thanks @dai.
That BBC RADIO 2 ROOM PIANO ROOM looks well worth exploring….
