This is pretty cool. Specially for all you ‘heads’ out there. Actual live footage of FZ avec Telecaster jamming with Ummagumma-era Floyd at a festival in Belgium.

I’ve seen this before, possibly through here, but had forgotten about it. Thanks.

Yeah I think Mojo /Johnny C might have posted it while Nick was on sabbatical.
It’s an interesting artefact but they don’t really get it on.

Zappa was hired as the festival’s MC and jammed with several people on the bill. He’d just broken up the Mothers Of Invention so was without a band and at a loose end. They offered him ten thousand dollars so of course he accepted. Problems with the French authorities necessitated it being moved from it’s intended location in Paris to just over the border in Belgium. The performances took place in cold October weather in a huge tent, set up in a turnip field.
It’s possible part of the lyric from Zappa’s later song “In France” were inspired by the event.
“We’re playing in a tent. It’s paying the rent.”
I’ve got a recording of that PF jam on “Interstellar Overdrive” and some of the other jams.
Caravan, Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, Blossom Toes and Sam Apple Pie. There’s nothing notable or exciting on any of them. Purely of historical interest.
Bootlegs from the festival include Zappa performing with:
Aynsley Dunbar’s “Retaliation: Improvisation” (7:08 – Oct 24th)
Victor Brox (vocals, harmonica); John Moorshead (guitar);
Alex Dmochowski (bass); Aynsley Dunbar (drums)
Pink Floyd: “Interstellar Overdrive” (20:25 – Oct 25th)
David Gilmour (guitar); Richard Wright (organ);
Roger Waters (bass); Nick Mason (drums)
Caravan: “If I Could Do It All Over Again, I’d Do It All Over You” (7:55 Oct 26th)
Pye Hastings (guitar & vocals); David Sinclair (keyboards);
Richard Sinclair (bass & vocals); Richard Coughlan (drums)
Blossom Toes: “Improvisation” (26:10 Oct 26th)
Brian Godding (guitar, vocals & keyboards); Jim Cregan (guitar & vocals);
Brian Belshaw (bass & vocals); Kevin Westlake (drums)
Sam Apple Pie: “Moonlight Man” (6:04 Oct 27th)
Sam Sampson (vocals & harmonica); Danny Barnes (lead guitar);
Andy Johnson (slide guitar); Bob Renny (bass & vocals); Lee Baxter Hayes Jr (drums)
Zappa can be heard introducing Captain Beefheart at the festival on The Captain’s “Grow Fins” rarities box:
“Listen, be quiet and pay attention to this man’s music. Because, if you don’t you might miss something important – and we wouldn’t want that to happen to you – because you need all the friends you can get…”

Thanks . Brilliant.
Ten big ones? How welcome would that have been eh? Dude had the arse out of his trousers by the time the Mothers broke up.

Here’s the original thread. Minus Mike’s insight above.

Was that where Zappa recruited Aynsley Dunbar for later Mothers?
Mike_H says
I was wondering about that too.
The Retaliation bassist, Alex Dmochowski, was a recruit later on too. Possibly at Aynsley’s suggestion.
He was known as Erroneous when he featured on “Waka/Jawaka”, “The Grand Wazoo” and “Apostrophe(‘)”. Possibly acquired the nickname because someone mis-spelt his name sometime?
