I saw this poster mentioning Frank Sanazi was playing a free show at some old blokes birthday party in a rough pub in an even rougher part of Dundee tonight. So I went along with my wife for an evening of alternative entertainment and we were not disappointed. There were about 50 folk there and most if not all were there for the birthday party, so we probably stood out a bit especially as there were no seats left and we spent the whole show leaning on the bar. It was cheap drink and free food and 2 half hour sets of Frank doing his cheeky mix of jokes and crooning.
In the break we sat in the other (quieter) bar and Frank wandered in and beelined to us, as we probably looked the least drunk folk in there. We chatted to him for 20 minutes about his comedy show experiences from Glastonbury to his forthcoming show supporting a re-formed Fine Young Cannibals at the London Palladium later this year. He was a lovely, funny chap although very pissed off that the birthday guy who hired him insisted that the Hitler image he performed in front of stayed where it was. It wasn’t quite right but was so typically Dundee on a Friday night it kinda worked and the crowd were in stitches the whole show through, so a splendid time was had by us all and I managed to take a couple of pics.
It was not the image Frank wanted behind him, he complained but the guy who’s party it was happened to be dressed in Stormtrooper gear so it was all a bit odd really, don’t think Frank wanted to rock the boat, making sure he got paid. It was NOT a Nazi Party, although that joke was made. Halfway through the big fella in the top pic threw up over himself, staggered out of the room and I never saw him for the rest of the evening.
You aren’t exactly selling this.
haha, no but just telling you like it was really, he was funny and can actually sing!
Sounds like a David Lynch film
ah, it wasn’t as bad as this – close mind
I’m still trying to get my head around this. It seems like an absolutely terrible night out! He’s performing in front of a picture of the actual Hitler, isn’t he? And you were surrounded by drunks.
Was it the GB News Easter party?
Not at all, as I mentioned Frank was unhappy with playing in front of a screen with Hitler’s image and he was doing it for a birthday party of mostly older folk, nearly all very drunk. I only found out about it through a FB post and although the public were freely invited it seems my wife & I were the only outsiders to turn up! I spent time chatting with Frank and he really is a lovely chap, same age as me too, there was absolutely no hint of racism in his jokes/songs, he also told me how he took one song out of his set after performing it once as he thought it was taking the “joke” too far. And it IS a joke, Jerry Sadowitz for example who I have seen multiple times since Glastonbury in the early 90’s is way closer to the acceptable edge than Frank, but as for some of the audience who knows?
Thanks, I think I get the idea of it. I’m just curious really.
I think he’s a clever comedian, but for someone who has Hitler hair and ‘tache, makes Nazi themed jokes and regularly appears at right wing comedy gigs where racist jokes are well received, to object to performing in front of a picture of Hitler is a bit much.
I wasn’t specifically objecting to the picture, or anything… but trying to work out what the point of it is. I don’t know anything about his history or who he performs in front of. When I said it was a GB News event, that was an attempt at a joke that might have been close to the truth.
Anyway, I don’t get any of this. It’s beyond me.
He is funny and I would recommend checking out videos on YouTube. Your GB News comment isn’t too far short of the mark.
About 35 years ago, I saw Bernard Righton in the comedy tent at Glasto. One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
I remember going to see John Thompson and Steve Coogan on a Sunday night at the Band On The Wall in Manchester in the early 90’s (I think!) where he did this. Very good it was.
We also used to see them regularly at the Withington Ale House (our local)
