At last another Roxy reissue, and only nine years since the debut album was given the same treatment….must confess I didn’t think we’d see any more unless they sold their catalogue but pleased to be proved wrong, especially as this is an absolute classic.

Those early Roxy albums (72 to 75) were fantastic, and I liked the live one, too. The reformation albums had a few moments, but were a bit mimsy for me. it wasn’t Bryan’s covers exactly; I also like his 70s solo albums. I don’t think losing Eno was so catastrophic, as Eddie Jobson did a good job, and it shifted focus to the songs and the front man a bit. Regarding reformation, I just thought “Oh Yeah”, a cover of “jealous Guy” and “Trash” (etc) not a patch on the earlier material. Roxy offered a future which was not like that of our big brothers, and in fact foretold the future very well, with the emergence of style, high-gloss production, and art and rock mixing without needing to be in the prog style. I loved their image, and that it annoyed double-denim and afghan coat wearers. What was so wrong with BF in a tux, or Eno in (fake) leopard skin? Sadly, i didn’t see them; the concert booked into Brighton in 1980 was cancelled.
I do like the ‘reformation’ albums, but they were a very different beast to the first run of albums which were basically one classic set after another.
As an aside, I think the Steven Wilson remix was done a good few years ago and has been gathering dust ever since.
I prefer the reformation albums, which is probably a minority view. The singles are great: Angel Eyes, Oh Yeah, The Same Old Scene, More Than This, Avalon. They shouldn’t have split up: Avalon is basically what the rest of the 80s ended up sounding like.
They’re the ones I listen to, and the first one. For some reason I never bothered with the ones in the middle .

I got the big set (at a bargain price) for the first album but was pretty unimpressed with it and I sold it. I think FYP is a better album, but will abstain from the big set. May get the Blu-ray but SDE’s shipping costs outside UK are very high and he doesn’t remove VAT unlike most vendors who ship internationally. May get it shipped to my brother in UK and will pick it up when visiting later this year
I’m with you on this – For Your Pleasure is, for me, their finest, most eclectic, most experimental hour as a band, not just Bryan’s backing band. I already have this on my original vinyl copy and on a couple of CD re-issues, but despite that, the BluRay has been ordered.

You can hear the point where Roxy’s albums and Bryan’s solo albums start to sound, well, interchangeable. Don’t get me wrong, I love ‘em both – but they get more homogeneous after Manifesto. Boys and Girls could easily have been mistaken for Roxy’s follow up to Avalon, in a blindfold tasting.
Yes I think of them as being pretty interchangeable. Bryan with a bunch of musos, with some overlap. Lovely both.
Ordered the Blu-ray. The early run of albums is great but I think this one will probably benefit most from an Atmos make over

You bet. Fantastic album. I think that “Stranded”, er, “came back harder” puts the notion Eno “made” early Roxy into check.
Depends how you define “early”…
And “run”, which, by my calculation, is at least three.
