Just about everyone who’s ever been anyone in the world of heavy metal
Pitching up to see the Sabs get together to wish Ozzy well in retirement.

Musings on the byways of popular culture

Are we sure it’s their final, final farewell though? I took this photo advertising a future Sabs’ show at the O2 in 2016, but I confess I thought the forward planning ambitious.
There is a great podcast on BBC Sounds narrated by Bev Bevan called Forging Metal all about the start of Heavy Metal in Birmingham.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002fzty
Dominic Sandbrook’s book The Great British Dream Factory suggests that there is a direct link between the sound of sBirmingham heavy industry, such as the metalworks where Tony Iommi worked (before famously slicing the ends off two fingers on his last day) and the Black Sabbath sound.
That is discussed in the podcast.
It’s discussed every time the birth of metal is discussed. Great story though.
Paul McCartney invented it. Straight up.
The Beatles invented everything didn’t they?
DONOVAN, shurely?
Donovan invented the concept of invention
No, The Beatles invented Donovan. And folk music.
I’m sure I’ve read on this very site that Donovan invented The Beatles. Ergo, by the transitive property, Donovan invented metal.
Black Sabbath invented heavy metal and Judas Priest honed it to pre NWOBHM perfection.
Then NWOBHM happened and it all changed.
Then Def Leppard took into a new exciting place.
And then I got bored with it and listened to The Smiths.
Bored with it?? I’m shocked, Unc…
…and stunned…
…but mostly shocked…
It’s a good case but the thing is The Beatles invented everything regardless of pesky facts.
I was told at some length that George Harrison single handedly invented the Byrds and so the whole American folk rock scene, CSN, The Eagles etc.
By a Beatles fanatic, @Twang?
You could say that!
Beethoven invented it – in one of the late string quartets the cello can be heard playing a power chord riff.
Beethoven will in all likelihood have nicked the riff from J.S. Bach.
Or Donovan.
The BBC Heavy Metal Britannia doc also made this connection, bringing Judas Priest and Diamond Head into the equation. Far be it for me to suggest though that Brian Tatler and Diamond Head should have a seat at the top table.
NWOBHM – tick
Influence (specifically on Large Oilrig and Metallica) – tick
All Time Great – not so sure
I think BT is an interesting guitarist in that world. Doesn’t regurgitate the same old licks.
I’m prepared to do any updates at Brisbane Road, Priestfield or London Road if required.
I’ll do it now. Pitches all looking good.
‘spect the first pre-season friendlies will be in a week or two.
Leicester beat Peterborough 3-1 earlier today.
Not a day for locals in the city centre with the Sabs, ELO and the Test Match all on.
Not surprised these is no mention – 6Music was concentrating on those oiks from Manchester. Jo Wiley described them as the greatest band in the World ffs.
That figures.
Worth noting this is a charity event … what a hero Ozzy is.
That’s one thing I don’t understand about the Oasis tour…would it have really hurt them that much to have given, say, at least the opening night’s profits to charity? I’m sure they could have found a way to cover the costs. They could have won some kudos for that.
The overwhelmingly cynical reaction on social media is that it’s a tax break for Sharon…Chazza for Shazza, if you will.
I’ve seen clips of Ozzy singing sitting down, and what I think was Steven Tyler singing “Whole Lotta Love”. A lot of the bands are covering Sabbath songs. No doubt more to be found on YouTube.
I don’t want normies ruining even more music genres. Long may metal be too gauche/ uncool / lesbian/ hideously white (I’ve heard that depressingly often), to keep the straights away.
Funny you should say that because it made me think of an interview with Noel Gallagher where he said you can’t hit the big time without appealing to “the squares”. Once they are on board, you’re away.
Yeah, metal is really niche. The hair metal / power ballad stage made it briefly more global and provided more mass appeal. Thank fuck that passed and it went back to something for nerds and good humoured grebs. that’s fine by me.
I hope that Birmingham finally catches on to the fact that it’s known globally as the birthplace of the metal movement. It matters to a lot of people.
Bravo to all involved for making this a charity event.
Well this is just marvellous!
Isn’t that great!
Apropos of nowt – in the days when I flew Business Class, I sat next to Ozzy and Sharon on a flight from Rome where she had been one of the MTV Awards hosts. She looked great but he was a complete shambles. For a while I thought he was drunk/stoned but chatty Sharon told me “That’s how he is these days.” On the two hour flight he drank 43 cups of tea and staggered to the toilet at least twenty times. Anybody who wanted an autograph from Ozzy got one from Sharon.
She asked if I was a fan of Black Sabbath – “No” I replied.
“Favourite band?” she said
“Currently it’s REM” says I.
Ozzy stops sipping tea “They’re alright, they are”
I recall an anecdote from someone who met and got chatting with Ozzy in a pub somewhere, in the days when Oz was drinking and drugging with abandon.
After several drinks had been taken, said person admitted that he didn’t really think much of Black Sabbath.
Ozzy was not in the least upset and they carried on drinking together until said person made their excuses and left, while still capable of getting home unaided.
In the video above Ozzy looks a thousand times better than 20 years ago!
My chums A & P went. I’m feeding their cats while they’re away. Doubtless I will hear all about it shortly.
I trust that with your friends being metalheads, their moggies
Will have suitably doomy names…
Twin girls: Amber and Jade.
Not Metal. Jade is Rock, and Amber is a Fossil. Insert your own punchline.
Very good!
I am disappoint. I’ve checked the setlist and no mention of Neon Knights.
Shocking I agree but Ozzy wasnt in the band for their best ever album. They showed some respect.
Yes he was…
Maybe…different styles and time.
Best for me…
“Video unavailable”, Unc – what was it?
FWIW, this would be among my half dozen “best for me” toons…on another day, it might have been Hole in the Sky, or War Pigs, or Under the Sun, or Sweet Leaf, or Megalomania, or…(contd. pg 94)
Sharon’s biggest challenge now is how she can monetise Ozzie’s twilight years.
Ozzy-branded Bowelzeebub incontinence pads?
Getting him a gig fronting one of those funeral payment plan ads that are on Talking Pictures all afternoon (“and I got a free hexagram just for calling them!”)
There’s an oral history of the 80s Glam Metal years called Havin’ a Good Time. It’s interesting to read what the younger bands thought about their interactions with the old guard. It’s not surprising that Alice Cooper was well-liked, but it was surprising (at least to me) that Ozzy was also popular and similarly seemed to treat the support bands well.
Havin’ a Good Time? Or Nothin’ But a Good Time?
You’re right, sorry it’s the latter. To be fair, I’m not an expert on Poison.
