“After 24 years, Hull’s Fonda 500 are calling it a day with one final performance.
We go one last time… with a bang… and then we will bury Simon’s famous hat in The Adelphi Car Park.
It will be fun. It will be magical. It will be the end.”

24 years? Did they have some time off, because I saw them at the Adelphi in 1997 when I lived in Hull and they were still just called Fonda, so that’s at least 26 years. One of the last gigs I went to in Hull before I moved to Belfast, so never saw them again.
FWIW I thought they were tremendous live, but I bought a few of the albums (8 Track Sound System & Autumn/Winter Collection) and never thought they translated to disc. Maybe some of the later stuff was better. That should hopefully be a good night.

There was an album every two years until 2008, then 10 years until the next one. I’ve always enjoyed the older songs live more than on record.
They played the 200-capacity Portland Arms in Cambridge back in June 2019, to an audience of about 35. Their previous Cambridge gig was at the same venue about 10 years before that (I was at that one, too, and it was rammed).
Perhaps their audience has moved on and, approaching middle-age, they’ve had enough of driving a van up and down the A1.
I asked our local gig promoter (and F500 fan) if he fancied putting them on for one last Cambridge gig: “I’ve got an Adelphi ticket and booked a hotel in Hull”.
I have a friend in Cottingham who I’ve not seen in a while…
