I have the other two both as SDEs and 2LP sets because the vinyl cuts are absolutely top-notch, and I tend to listen on vinyl, but the boxes contain gigs and video.
Talking Heads are one of my most favourite bands, enough so that I imported the CD/DVD-A Brick box from 20 years ago, so I already have all of the extra tracks. And I have the live stuff on bootlegs of varying shitness.
I don’t have the space, or the funds, to buy the US-only multi-LP boxes on import, which is probably for the best.
I thought that until I played the ’77 2LP set. It’s an all-analogue cut from the master tape and makes my 1978 all-analogue original (cut from a copy tape) sound like it was recorded through a thick woollen sock.
Psycho Killer was a default play late in the night every week at the Castle Club in Exeter. It finished off many a sweaty night’s dancing. After bingeing hard on the first two albums, this became my most played Talking Heads LP back in the day. I still have my vinyl copy with the textured sleeve. I’d love to buy a ‘super deluxe’ version of it, but this isn’t it. £80 for, effectively, two live gigs? Nope, sorry.
I first heard it at my cousin Simon’s house just outside Falmouth over the Christmas break, when I was 9, and it scared the bejeezus out of me. Apart from the production, the E.T. like figure on the inner sleeve put the frighteners on.
It still gives me the jitters today.
Exactly how 11-y-o Simon had come to spend his festive record token on a Talking Heads LP is a mystery, and he died in 2010, so I can’t ask him. I bought Speaking In Tongues (on tape, with the extended tracks) in a charity shop this week, because in 1984 he bought it in Stevenage Woollies, and I bought 77/MSABAF on a twofer.
I always think of him whenever I hear Talking Heads. Funny old thing, this music lark, innit?
I bought it on cassette when I was 12 or 13 having fallen hard for Road to Nowhere and And She Was. I told everyone they were my favourite band and felt very cool buying a 3 or 4 year old album. Backlist!
I listened to it on repeat thinking ‘do I like this?’ Truth is I didn’t because it sounded nothing like Little Creatures, it sounded weird. Love it now of course.
By this, their third album, they had exhausted their song book and had to start afresh. They played most of the backing tracks as live. I’m not surprised there are few outtakes.
The real find to date of these SDEs has been the CBGBs’ live concert on the 77 set. I saw the band post Fear Of Music and they were superb live. I’m really looking forward to both these concert recordings.
Also, the remastering amounts to a remix it is so different. If it is up to the standard of the first two, we are in for a treat.
I guess partially to promote this, but mainly in honour of a new (temporary) SiriusXM channel (CH145, for those in North America), the band got together in New York a few days ago
Apparently David Byrne has turned down 80 million for a reunion tour, he’s probably doing ok financially, but I imagine the rest of the band may not be doing quite as well.
I am happy with the 5.1 mixes I already have for the first 5 albums. I also picked up a couple of live albums for earlier releases that were available separately outside the big boxes.
I have mixed feelings about a TH (live) reunion. I saw them several times and they were superb. I have those memories. I can’t imagine a. how expensive tickets would be these days and b. how hard it would be to get them. I think I kind of prefer the preserved in aspic option. Wasn’t one of the reasons, possibly specious in the light of more recent revelations, that they split up because they had gone as far as they could without playing stadia?
agreed, I saw them in 1980 on the Remain In Light tour and to me there’s no way they could better that night, I guess XTC have the same mega offers to tour again but again, it just wouldn’t be the same.
I saw him at a big stadium & it was spectacular. Technology has moved on dramatically since the mid-eighties. I’m sure a Talking Heads tour would be an absolute knock out, visually & aurally. They are still healthy enough as far as I can tell.
I’ve seen Roxy Music a few times in the seventies and then again in the noughties. The difference was incredible. They were so much better. No tuning up. No wonky synths. No bum notes. It was unbelievable.
Stadium or arena? I think if the Talking Heads reformed stadiums (stadia) may be a big ask. They are not Oasis. They would fit in well in the basketball/hockey arenas across North America The general presentation of concerts is light years ahead of where it was 40 years ago (with corresponding ticket prices) but youth also has something going for it and arenas often still have horrible sound
The 2LP set is 1.5LP with side D as an etching – bugger off, Warners!
The Blu-ray only has two videos, both from OGWT, so they’ll be in SD.
On the upside, I have the two live sets as bootlegs and they’re brill.
I’ll wait until it is sub-50 quid.
“Hard pass from me. I picked up a near mint target of the Kevin Grey remaster and it’s real nice. I’m happy with it. 👍👍👍 ~ Enjoy the music.”

In all seriousness, I’m not sure the sound quality can be any further improved on most of their albums.

Blimey! Sold!
Gorts! Lock this thread!!

I got the impression that they split up because they had gone as far as they could without Byrne getting sectioned.

I would imagine David Byrne has made a lot of money from his recent tours. Sold out the World over and quite rightly so. He is a top live performer.
