Today would have been Duane’s birthday. Someone just asked Jason Isbell what his favourite DA track is. Jason picked Dreams. Immediately, Duane’s ‘successor’, Derek Trucks, jumped onto the conversation, saying he agreed.
When it’s those two agreeing, it would be hard to argue. What say you, Afterword Hive Mind?
For me it’s always been Jelly Jelly. Achingly sad.
Oh the live version of “You don’t love me” off Fillmore East. Dicky great too but Duane is on fire. A veritable grab bag of essential licks.
Great song, great version.
Live version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
You know that bit where the guitar solo really lifts off? Raises the hairs on the back of your neck? The high point of the album? That’s Dickey. His song, too.
Not a tune with any fireworks, but this is probably my favourite:

The obvious answer is Layla but I love Wilson Pickett more than Derek and the Dominos.
The best cover of Hey Jude I’ve ever heard:
Lennon hated that. But what did he know?
@Tiggerlion, I never disagree with you but, Layla? Apart from the riff, I’ve always thought that Duane just gets in the way. Especially in the piano coda.
I was thinking of the awesome mesh of guitars on the edited single, not the slide on the coda. He makes a beautiful noise.
I loved that, bought the single as a pimply teenager
Whipping post – live
If you wanted that, you should have asked for it!
CRACKERJACK!
Bloody hell, that made me jump so much I’ve dropped me cabbage.
I’m going to say Loan Me A Dime, from Boz Scaggs’ eponymous solo album, because I’m the type of bloke who likes to flaunt his deep catalogue knowledge to earn peer respect.
You fucker: I was about to do just that. Sad but true, but only cos it’s great
And, just cos I can, here’s a who’da thunk it, Lulu:
Yep, that Boz track is a doozy.
And the Lulu?
A doozytoo.
No doo-doo!
Me too HP, but being a shallow kinda guy I will reference Anthology Volume 1.
Being more elitist, I will reference Skydog: The Duane Allman Retrospective
Been trying to pick one out since I saw @niallb‘s post but there’s too much good stuff.
I’m so confused. I thought this was about Duane Eddy. Honestly. How many Duane’s in music can there be?
