Thanks Freddy! I did wonder if the 40th anniversary was going to be marked in some way and that’s a great way to do it.
I was the only kid at my school who supported Ipswich and was either ridiculed or patronised for it. In the run up to the 1975 FA Cup I started to follow Ipswich after a brief half-hearted (and based only on Stan Bowles) QPR allegiance. I followed the games against Leeds on the radio and It was incredibly exciting. I also liked the team when I saw them play on TV.
Yes, that match certainly was the peak of Roger Osborne’s career, before a fairly sharp descent. After scoring the winning goal, he fainted and had to be substituted. I think I’m right in saying he only played a few top-flight games for Ipswich after that, before disappearing into lower-league anonymity.
It was a great day. I started to really believe it could happen when they dominated WBA in the semi final. Johnny Giles with his blooded headband, if I remember rightly, a look appropriated by our own Terry Butcher some years later when playing for England.
Great to hear those reminiscences on the BBC clip. John Wark always seemed a thoroughly nice bloke and I love the fact he says to people he was an Ipswich player before he mentions his success at anothe club called Liverpool.
When Stevie G (thankfully not to be our next manager) was introduced to Warky recently he was rightly impressed but didn’t appear to be aware of, the moustachioed midfield maestro’s goal scoring prowess in our glorious UEFA cup winning season…33 goals or whatever it was.
Thought Steven would have been aware of that as a “student of the game.”

Thank you, Freddy!
For some reason I found myself thinking about Laurie (and about Paul Cooper) while dog walking in the woods just the other day.
nigelthebald says
And yes, he certainly does!

Two fine, if a little on the small side, keepers.
its 40 years near enough since our glorious Wembley triumph, perhaps your dogs knew?
nigelthebald says
I don’t think Tilly knew, but I was there.
(Easiest ever hitch hike to London.)

I was 13 and watched it at home. Had crisps and a chocolate milkshake !

That game against Leeds! Clive Woods goal in the 2nd reply?
Black Celebration says
Third replay, in fact. I think Alan Parry was the commentator on the radio and he very nearly exploded. Same here.
nigelthebald says
I was there as well.
Chased through the back streets of Leicester by bad loser Leeds fans afterwards.

True but I’d be happy to have that as a legacy!
“Osborne 1-0!” still sends shivers through me.

I’ve just been catching up with the BBC Suffolk’s 40th anniversary story, watching the video with tears rolling down my cheeks.

That’ll be captain John Wile with the bloody headband. Great game that – feels like yesterday!
