Everyone here is a fan of the Get Funky hitmakers, aren’t they? That trademark chug, jangle and harmonising has been making us nicer people since 1990 or so. But what does one reach for in the long wait between Teenage Fanclub records and dates? Well, try this vaguely chronological playlist for size. Everything flows; you get the bands who influenced them and the acts they influenced; you get some related turns and covers; plus you get curveballs like Queen, the Alan Parsons Project and Steve Miller Band. I might well have posted this here before, in which case: sorry. But you can never have too much of this type of music, so please let me know of anything else that might fit in.

I’m going for another Big Star – The Ballad Of El Goodo
Maybe some Soft Boys – Underwater Moonlight or I Wanna Destroy You
Plenty of fine fine listening already there though … I’m going in
I blimmin’ love El Goodo but September Gurls is an almost perfect three minutes for me. Thanks for the other suggestions. We may see this playlist expanding in the coming days.
Going by that clip, the film has been more significantly cleaned up than the audio.
Oops. Above comment meant for the Pink Floyd thread.
Superb list – many thanks, Martin!
@martin-horsfield Enjoying listening right now. Thank you.
I’d make a strong recommendation for adding “Suddenly Mary” by The Posies
And how about The DBs? Judy or Amplifier?
Frosting on the Beater was a pretty decent album from a few years back…must dig it out
That title 😳
I see you’ve got Grand Drive on there – I’d suggest I Saw Love by Bennett Wilson Poole as being a Cinderella’s-slipper-snug fit for this project.
And maybe this isn’t so far off..?
(Peach Pit – Lips Like Yours)
Oh, and these guys:
(The Thorns – I Can’t Remember)
This is a great song Teenage Fanclub, especially Gerry Love, never wrote:
Agreed. It’s already on there
Good to see Cosmic Rough Riders in that list. A direct “descendant” of them would be Ian M. Bailey, who sings and plays the songs that he and Daniel Wylie, ex CRRs, write.
4th album due out any day now.
Another great list Martin, just one of many! Thanks.
There have been a couple of very pleasant albums from this trio:
That’s lovely stuff, thanks for the recommendation!
Dropkick are very Fannie-esque. I saw them as a support act many years ago. Later found out the singer has the same name as me.
I’ve been recommended them before. May go to see them next week. That singer is v much like Norman Blake
Good list. Perhaps some Tom Petty? “American Girl” would be the obvious one or maybe “Straight into darkness”? I’m also humming The Searchers “When you walk in the room” too.
When You Walk In The Room was, of course, written by Jackie DeShannon, which is also on the list.
Needles and Pins, which I was playing off 7″ last night, is listed as a Jack Nitzsche/Sonny Bono composition, but Jackie contests this. I’m minded to agree with her.
Occupying a very sweet spot between the Go-Betweens and the Fannies..verses in this case more the former, choruses the latter.
I love Rolling Blackouts
This is my fave BMX Bandits tune, their cover of a track written by G. Love for the Clydesmen, and covered again here by, um, Teenage Fanclub.
Teenage Fanclub, a band so good that even their ex-drummer’s band was pretty good (and very Fanclubesque).
His Don’t Let Love Pass You By is the best song they never wrote but sadly not on Spotify
A very enjoyable thread. Here are some, fine jangly guitars from Canada.
Love a bit of Alvvays, and Norman’s a fan too.
I’d like to suggest this late 90’s powerpop cracker from The Shazam
Yes, I’d forgotten this band.
Same here! The Stranded Stars was one of my most played songs for a couple of years, and then I just forgot about them.
That song, which I do vaguely remember now, is fucking superb. Thanks for posting.
I’ve been playing it a lot since this thread. It’s unbeatable power pop.
Here’s a track by the great Irish band Something Happens that could easily have been recorded by the Fannies! Its full title is Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello (Petrol) for some reason. I saw them supporting the Undertones last year and they’re still a great live band.
This one I know. The Petrol in the song title is in relation to That Petrol Emotion. Something Happens thought this sounded much like That Petrol Emotion of that era…around the time of the Chemicrazy album.
Great song…but doesn’t belong here. Without ranting too much, I really dislike Teenage Fanclub. I should like them. I like all their influences. Love Big Star, The Velvets, etc. And they’re frequently described as power pop, which I love. Pop songwriting combined with crunchy guitars? Few things are more exciting.
But Teenage Fanclub are not that. September Gurls is a great song but I’m not sure it should be the basis for an entire career. The OP mentioned the chug of Teenage Fanclub and therein lies the issue. Mid-tempo, nice melodies, lovely harmonies. But more Pictures of Lily rather than I Can See For Miles. All very nice but a bit dull.
Something Happens, TPE, The Lemonheads, Ash and, best of all, The Hummingbirds were all recording songs that popped like a shaken bottle of Club Orange in this era. Blush by The Hummingbirds explodes out of the speakers.
That said, that Alvvays song is great. Never heard of them before so that’s one to investigate.
Rant over…apologies for derailing a Teenage Fanclub thread with a dislike of said band but, y’know, I do really dislike them.
I was going to wait until the thread was about to slip over the page 1 horizon before just mentioning that I’m not a fan (unlike it would seem everyone else apart from you, A45RWD). I don’t dislike them, I just don’t get them. Mind you, I do really dislike power pop – profoundly irritating inispid music for me. Where is the bass?
It takes all sorts. I am really happy everyone else seems to love TF and power pop. It’s just not for all of us.
It’s more uptempo than Teenage Fanclub usually manage but the guitars and chord changes have always reminded me of that kind of sound. It’s probably more that when I first heard and saw Teenage Fanclub there was something about them that reminded me of the Happens.
I’m a big TPE fan and regard neither of the aforementioned bands as nearly as good.
I suspect this article will be of interest.
15 Acts defining the Janglecore Pop Renaissance

Kiwi Jr sound very promising.
Might be better if they knew some Rock ‘n’ Roll.
It just struck me that some of Lloyd Cole’s songs are pleasantly jangly.
Thanks for this. I still play the Floyd list you posted some years ago.
Jangle pop heaven from Newfoundland’s finest.
Jangle gem galore on this thread. That is excellent @TrypF.
I had to find our more. It’s from 2004 and get a lot of plays in Newfoundland.

This one chimes with the mood
Hal – What A Lovely Dance
Sacre Bleu. Some rather agreeable jangly sounds from across La Manche.
Listening to this in car today, and I thought this in the right (jangular*) vein:
*Copyright Niall B
This song has the best chorus ever in the history of rock n roll. Ever.
…it has, hasn’t it? I used to see them live all the time (hailing from their part of the world) and this was a highlight of their gigs.
Still is, whenever it’s played by Mr McNabb. He’s doing a few gigs as the Icicle Works towards the end of the year
Going through the playlist, I realised that this category of music (power pop?) is something I really love in a background sort of way.
Here’s a good one:
That was already in the list. Great minds. I absolutely love that period of Duffy’s career. That’s the Fanclub-like Velvet Crush providing the jangle.
Oh, not sure how I passed that one- might have fallen asleep! But anyway, you’re right. Peak velvet crush/Mitch Easter vibe.
Thanks for all the suggestion, folks. I particularly liked the Shazam and Primary 5 songs. Fortunately because the Fanclub’s trademark chug, jangle and harmonising is something of a classic I feel this list will go on for years to come.
The Rosenbergs from the early 2000’s.
And from a few years earlier, Myracle Brah.
And finally, one that has a video.
This just in! ( As in, the album came out yesterday: The Tubs!!)
The great Brian Charles – as far as I know he only made this one album, sadderdaydreaming, but it is a powerpop classic
